Whos scheduled to pitch for the Chiefs tomorrow night vs QC? May be heading over to the Quad Cities for the game so I was just curious.

Karen mentioned this yesterday:

Peoria Journal-Star"]Catcher Michael Brenly arrived in Peoria and is eligible to come off the disabled list on Thursday and play against Quad Cities. No decision has been made on what the corresponding roster move would be to make room for Brenly in the 25-player limit.

Tyler Colvin walked for the 7th time this season.

Searle is putting up an interesting line: 3 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 7 GO-0 FO

Searle: 4 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 K, 10 GO-0 FO

That's a lot of groundouts.

Searle struggles and can't get out of the 5th. :( 4.2 IP, 5 H, 4 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 11 GO-0 FO.

Daytona down 4-2, middle of the 5th.

Mike Brenly is in Peoria's lineup. Looks like Mario Mercedes was placed on the DL.

Carpenter: 4 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 6 K. Vitters 1/2 with another single. Rebel Ridling is 1/2 with yet another double (along with a walk and a K).

Hung-Wen Chen was solid too. 6.1 IP, 6 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 4 K.

Starlin Castro's 5th inning single

Daytona News-Journal"]"Searle ended up getting a tough, cheap loss," Bailey said. "I thought he really pitched well after the third batter (in the first inning) until the time he left when we took him out because of pitch total. Those were two unearned runs in the fifth inning."

Samardzija on his change (the whole story is about Samardzija - there is some good info if you get past the fluff):

Des Moines Register"]"It's coming along well," says Samardzija, whose Iowa Cubs make their home debut Friday night. "I threw it a few times last time out, and threw it for strikes. It's just about (having) confidence in the pitch and being able to throw it whenever you like."

...

Samardzija threw 36 pitches out of the bullpen in the season opener on April 9. He got it up to 62 on Monday. Manager Bobby Dickerson says they'll shoot for 70-75 Saturday night, when Samardzija's expected to make his first Des Moines start.

"He just loves to compete," Dickerson says of the 6-foot-5 hurler who, according to the Web site Fangraphs.com, used his fastball (68.6 percent) and slider (10.4) on 79 percent of his pitches with Chicago in 2008. "He's doing well. That split-finger is going to end up being an 'out' pitch. I think he's such an athlete that he takes things well."

I like your style.

1. Colvin - meh

5. Samardzija - top 100 prospect in MLB

6. Lansford - converted to pitcher

7. Clevenger - potential big league backup C

8. Muldowney - 2 season-ending arm surgeries

9. Andersen - can't hit at Peoria

10. Renshaw - traded for Trachsel

11. Huseby - reliever at Peoria, topping out at 90 mph

12. Kopach - cut

13. Camp - AAA utility guy

14. Rundle - some potential, too many Ks, struggling at Daytona but age appropriate

15. Canepa - cut

16. B. Parker - converted to pitcher and already at AA, could be a good big league reliever

19. Papelbon - reliever at AA, tops out in upper 80s though

20. Kreier - doing ok at Peoria but repeating and has questionable stuff

22. Rosa - some potential, is at Daytona

24. Matulia - is expected to be converted to a coach

27. Redmond - disappointing in that he didn't make a full season team

34. Samson - 2B/SS at Daytona

39. Hatley - starting P at Peoria

After 16th rounder Blake Parker, I only listed guys who are still in the Cubs system (the rest were either cut or never signed).

Gotta hope Samardzija comes through.

This one is the one I thought would redeem this draft.

At least the 08 draft looks great so far (and I've seen quotes from other organizations saying that).

Cashner and Flaherty should be fine. Shafer has been good but his stuff hasn't bounced back. Carpenter, Cerda and Jericho Jones have great potential. And Rebel Ridling, Jay Jackson, Dan McDaniel and Casey Coleman have been great so far. Of course we'll regret not signing Alex Wilson.

Eh, the guys you can't sign you have to live with. I mean we could have had both Lincecum and LaPorta, but they are extreme gambles that I like taking. If you do sign one it's having a second first rounder. That's why I love what the Royals did last year.

Vitters on his own should make the '07 draft a good one.

I think there's a difference between not signing a top 10 round pick guy like Wilson and guys like Lincecum and LaPorta (and Victor Sanchez and Sonny Gray) who went much later. You don't waste a top 10 round pick on a signability question unless you're confident you'll get it done - those picks still have good value if you go with a guy more likely to sign. Also, the new rules give you an extra pick in the first few rounds if you don't sign the guy (a la the Yankees and Cole) but nothing after that.

Plus Wilson has looked like a first rounder so far at TAMU this year.

True. I do like spending the lower pick, I was thinking more along the lines of the LaPorta and TIm really low picks. But, you gotta admit getting Mellville where the Royals did can really help a draft out.
