Is this the NBA Offseasn Thread? Dont know where else to put this put the Pistons fired Michael Curry today after 1 year of being their head coach. I must admit I like seeing the Pistons in disarray.

Yeah, I saw that, and I agree. Any GM who passes on Wade/Anthony and Bosh to take Darko should be instantly fired. But I digress. I hear the new coach will either be Doug Collins or Bill Lambeer.

Even when that GM put together a team of spare parts and castoffs that won an NBA title just prior to that draft decision? Yeah, that makes a lot of sense.

Besides, it's not like Joe was the only one caught up in the Darko hype. I disagreed with it at the time because Carmelo was the sure thing and Darko was based on potential. Regardless, nearly everyone thought Darko would be much better than he is and Joe made the error of drafting on need rather than taking the best player.

At any rate, wherever you heard Laimbeer you heard wrong. It will not be Laimbeer. He's going to hire a coach with more experience and basically everyone with knowledge of the situation says it won't be Bill.

The move needed to be made. Curry was a disaster all around last year. The Pistons fan in me wants Doug. The NBA fan in me doesn't want him to leave TNT. I think Avery could be alright.

Don't get me wrong, Dumars was a heckuva GM early in his tenure and the Pistons were great when they have the "the sum is better then their parts" strategy of building a team. But come on, you have to think long term. Billups/Rip/Two Wallaces were all pushing the wrong side of 30 yrs old. Taking Carmelo or Bosh would have allowed Detroit to trade either Prince or R. Wallace were they still had real good value and they continue to be an elite team in the east. Those GM's along with Dumars, should have had their heads checked. You can't based your opinion on a Euro on what others sees. Darko was not all that good even with the hype, and you just knew Brown was not going to play Darko. That was a waste of time for everybody involved.

I didn't say I believe it, I said early on I had heard a rumor that Lambeer could be considered. Since then that rumor died out.

Agreed. Curry was simply over his head as a Head Coach and at least Dumars admitted his mistake. I too think Doug will be the new Pistons head coach, because he was definately interested in the Bulls job, before it unrattled. So I believe Collins will be the Det's new coach.

I think you guys have your timelines mixed up a bit.

Detroit won the title the year after they drafted Darko, not right before. That was the 2003 draft and they won the title in the 2003-04 season.

Also, at the time of the draft, Billups turned 27 right at the beginning of the season and Rip was only 25, which isn't pushing 30. Ben Wallace was 29 but at the time of the draft, they didn't have Rasheed yet - they traded for him in the middle of the season. Tayshaun Prince was entering his second year at the time of the draft after averaging 3.3 ppg and 10.4 minutes so I doubt that that time the Pistons knew he was going to develop into a 14 ppg scorer.

Note: That's to say that it was the right or wrong move to draft Darko, just giving you a bit of info.
