How about Eric Bedard as a plan B?

Mariners Fire Sale In '09?

By Drew Silva [April 4 at 2:43pm CST]

Larry LaRue of the Tacoma News Tribune expects the Mariners to host a fire sale this season, around or before the July 31 trade deadline. Many folks would probably agree. Erik Bedard, Adrian Beltre, Miguel Batista and Jarrod Washburn could all be on their way out.

It'll be a cost-cutting operation, but should also result in the M's forming a younger squad that is better equipped for the future.

[Mariners general manager] Jack Zduriencik has shown a willingness to make deals large (J.J. Putz) and small (Chris Burke), writes LaRue. He has stockpiled young players and pieces like Chris Shelton, in part to improve the Mariners minor league season and in part to act as a 7-11 convenience store for teams in need of a quick fix.

Who else could go by the deadline? Jose Lopez? Chad Cordero? Kenji Johjima?

Nobody else on the Ms list would be useful to us, but if no Peavy deal can happen, Id take Bedard. I know Hendry has shown some interest in him in the past.

most of those guys have horrendous contracts and can't be moved. at least beltre's contract is up after this season so i could see someone taking him on if they need a 3B at the deadline. silva has 3 years, $36M which is awful. i guess if someone is desperate enough they could take on washburn or batista since their contracts are up. nobody wants johjima for 3 years and $24M.

lopez has value due to a team-friendly contract, especially if the progress he made offensively last season was a real breakthrough - but he may not be a guy that the m's want to give up. bedard has a lot of value if he's healthy - look at what the m's gave up to get him.

It doesn't not make sense to trade those guys, but it also doesn't make sense to trade those guys.

1) Bedard is the only valuable commodity out of those players capable of returning any sort of MLB of future MLB talent, but even then he's a FA at the end of the season, so they likely won't get much out of him

2) Batista, Beltre, and Washburn are all in the last year of their contracts, and none of them will get the M's any sort of valuable return as rental trades

3) They're basically now deciding to trade away their veterans, but all they will be is half season rentals. The only point this would make is to free up salary room, but all that salary will be freed up after the season is over anyways, and they likely would be on the hook for at least part of what is owed to them before the year is over if they traded

4) The only reason I see them doing this is to get SOMETHING back, even if it ends up being practically worthless to their MLB club since these players helped them very little... but it's too little too late. Their value has flown the coop at this point. Maybe if they did this a year ago it might be intriguing to other teams but not now.

I'll take one of those guys if Felix comes over in the deal.

What kind, if any, of NTC does Bedard have? Limited? Full? None?

I don't know his contract situation but I can't see anyone wanting to stay in Seattle so it probably ain't a big deal if he has one.

It's not that I would doubt he would accept a trade to the Cubs, it was more about what kind of competition we could face trading for him. If he has full/limited NTC it will be easier to get him as less teams will be able to get in on him. If he doesn't have a NTC we don't have a great chance of getting him as every team needing pitching will probably be interested and the Cubs clearly don't have the best prospects to offer in a package. Kind of like Peavy if it wasn't for the NTC we wouldn't have any sort of chance of getting him, but because he will only go to 2-3 teams (in which the Cubs are his favorite) we have a legit chance of trading for him.
