ST - 3/24: Cubs (Gaudin) vs. Rockies (Smith), 3:05 pm CT

Interesting how they keep giving Gaudin starts despite the fact that theres no chance of him being in the rotation, even as a number 6 starter.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. If Samardzija gets sent to the minors and we need a spot start, we would probably turn to the long man. Chad Gaudin looks like he will probably be the long guy and spot starter. Sure if a guy is on the DL, then we would go with Samardzija. But were not gonna make a roster move for one random start.

I would tend to think that Heilman would be penciled in as the spot starter... he's certainly done nothing to persuade me otherwise.

Lou said he's going to be the 7th inning guy, Lou even used him for one inning yesterday. It's hard to be a short reliever pitching the 6th through 8th inning three or four days a week and then start random games. If Heilman is gonna be the spot starter, he needs to be the long guy and only pitch a few days a week like Marshall and Lieber last year. Only having Heilman in the pen for two days a week, and mostly using him in blow outs or extra inning games is wasting him. Thats why Gaudin will probably get that spot, especially with starting alot in the past.

yeah gaudin is pretty extraneous at this point, but i'd like to see him stay in the organization because harden is completely unreliable, zambrano is an injury risk and marshall tends to get hurt as well. plus the cubs don't have a whole lot of options beyond the starting rotation - samardzija looked good at times last year but still has work to do on his secondary offerings, hart is more of a two-pitch bullpen guy, and heilman may or may not be starter material.

Yeah Gaudin has had a bad spring with a 10.03 era in 11.2 innings with 8 walks and only 7 strike outs. Lucky for Gaudin, Samardzija has a 9.00 era in 11 innings, and Guzman has a 9.00 era in 8 innings. Right now it looks like there's three spots for Gaudin, Vizcaino, Guzman, Patton and Samardzija. With the way Gaudin struggled late in the year and this spring. I'm a little worried about him not making the team. But he also has a 4.71 era in 50 career starts, and has a 4.34 era in 40 starts over the last two years. So hopefully his track record will get him a spot on the team.

As much as Lou dislikes Gaudin, I think he dislikes Vizcaino more because he's only effective against RH hitters. Hopefully Lou is smart enough to start Samardzija in Triple A. Lets keep Gaudin and Guzman, then see if we can find anyone to take Vizcaino off our hands. If we can't then lets try to make a deal to keep Patton, otherwise we will have to let him go. But starting Samardzija in Triple A, is a no brainer since we can call him up if one of these other pitchers struggle.
