Mariners were interested in Kosuke?

Mariners Showed Interest In Fukudome?

By Tim Dierkes [February 19 at 9:11am CST]

According to Phil Rogers of the Chicago Tribune:

A major-league source said teams approached the Cubs about trading for Kosuke Fukudome, although only in trades where GM Jim Hendry would have had to take back bad contracts. The Mariners, shopping pitchers Jarrod Washburn and Erik Bedard and catcher Kenji Johjima, are believed to have been among them.

It seems that these conversations were in the offseason and are not active. Fukudome has $38MM coming for 2009-11. Johjima will receive $24MM over the same time period, while the pitchers are signed only for '09.

While I myself am not quite ready to give up on Kosuke, the thought of trading him for Bedard is quite intriguing. The guy had one bad, injury plagued year, and Id be all about him. Even if Johjima would have been involved as a backup catcher, and they then could have gotten Cedeno in the same deal. As for Washburn, Id just assume take back Traschle or Lieber, but Kosuke, Cedeno, and Olson(asuming the Pie/Olson trade happenes) for Bedard, Johjima, and Heilman doesnt sound half bad. Then, we could have re signed Edmonds for cheap and platooned him with Johnson.

Erik Bedard has been injured, one way or the other, in all but one of his 5 full seasons. It's not that he had one injury riddled season, it's that he always has injury riddled seasons. He's like the Milton Bradley of pitching. Great talent, tremendous upside, but you can hardly count on him to be healthy for a full season

That article doesn't say they they would have offered Bedard. It says the Mariners were one of the teams interested in Kosuke, and then listed Bedard as one of the players they have been shopping this offseason.

Also, bedard didn't have "one bad injur plagues year". He's injured just about every year and 2007 was the only time he's come even close to being that good.

Yeah, I took the article as examples of the kind of bad contracts Hendry might have to accept in a trade.

Bedard was offered arbitration by the Mariners. If they wanted to let him go, they could have simply non-tendered him. They would be looking to recoup some of the huge amounts that they traded to get him.

I wonder how much Hendry considered the offers he got for Fukudome? It would at least explain the otherwise inexplicable Gathright acquisition.

No, the Gathright acquisition was because he knew he was going to get rid of Pie.

He didn't need to replace Pie since he already had a backup CF in Johnson or Fukudome depending on who's starting that day.
