Rebound from what? They lucked out in 2007 and had a good record even though they were outscored. Last year they were right where they should be and that was with a great year from Johnson. They have Webb and Haren and that's basically it. I don't see them being good at all.

Between a more seasoned Upton and Scherzer, a full season of rauch and a possibly healthy Byrnes (though some would debate he's makes them better) Along with the likely improvements of Young, Jackson, Drew and Reynolds they could be very good team. They need to find a 2B and another starter but they could be a very good team this year.

Why are those guys likely to improve?

I think Drew is ready to break out. He had a big 2nd half this year. Young still has some upside and his power and SBs were down in 08. He should improve, but I don't think he'll be as good as 07. Jackson is probably done improving, but should be steady. I don't see Reynolds getting any better.

As for the Giants, they now have a rotation of: Lincecum, Cain, Sanchez, Lowry, Johnson and Zito. Lowry is a ? because he didn't pitch last year. But I wonder if the Prince Fielder for Cain trade could be back on.

The D-Backs and Dodgers will be "fighting it out" for the NL West next year...it's gonna be ugly, but those are the two best teams with the most talent, even if Manny goes elsewhere.

McCovey Chronicles' Take

It's honestly not a bad move on the Giants' part. Their rotation will be really good, especially in that park, and their other options for offensive upgrades were lacking. Now they don't have to rush their name pitching prospects to the majors and they'll get decent production out of RJ. Plus, they don't have to forfeit a draft pick. If he flames out, oh well, it's a one year deal, no biggie.
