I remember, a little bit, when Wilkins had his big year. I believe he was still young at the time. Was he regarded as a top prospect then? Was he a good defender? Anyone know what his downfall was.

I am assuming there was similar hope/expectation for Wilkins to continue to develop. If not why not?

I'm really looking for some reassurances (as much as that is possible) that Soto stands a better chance than Wilkins did of continuing to produce and hoping that someone familiar with Wilkin's situation can shed some light.

Wilkins had a series of nagging injuries (I wanna say shoulder and knee) after that monster 1993 season. I think that led to the trade for Louis Gozalez and Scott Servais. He was pretty good behind the plate because he was known for a strong arm. Too bad the needle in the ass era hadn't spread across all of baseball by then because Gonzo and Sammy would have made a nice Right/Left middle of the order.

Wilkins had two previous half-seasons with the Cubs before his career year. He didn't do it as a rookie like Soto did.

I realize he wasn't a rookie but they were about the same age. I would almost argue that since Wilkins had more "seasoning" his season was a little less likely to be a fluke. I didn't recall the injuries so maybe that played a big part.

Rick Wilkins at his best wasn't even close to being half as sexy as Geo.

LOL! I remember meeting Wilkins at a Denny's in Oakbrook or somewhere like that. He was doing some sort of a benefit for Hurricane Andrew relief, I think it was. Nice guy.
