Since this post, the Cubs did exercise Harden's option, so that first subtotal is actually up to $109,575,000.

JeffH[/url]"]Right now, we have the following players under contract:

LF - Alfonso Soriano ($16,000,000)

RF - Kosuke Fukudome ($11,500,000)

3B - Aramis Ramirez ($15,650,000)

2B - Mark DeRosa ($5,500,000)

1B - Derrek Lee ($13,000,000)

SP - Carlos Zambrano ($17,750,000)

SP - Ted Lilly ($12,000,000)

SP - Jason Marquis ($9,875,000)

RP - Jeff Samardzija ($1,300,000)

Subtotal - $102,575,000

The Cubs have team options on Henry Blanco ($3,000,000) and Rich Harden ($7,000,000). They may decline the option on Blanco and try to re-sign him for less. Barring a bad report on Harden's arm, they'll exercise the option on him. For this accounting, let's assume they exercise both options.

Subtotal - $112,575,000

The Cubs have three arbitration-eligible players: Reed Johnson, Neal Cotts, and Chad Gaudin. Let's assume they re-sign all three. Johnson ($3,500,000). Cotts ($1,200,000). Gaudin ($3,500,000). These figures may be slightly high.

Subtotal - $120,775,000

I've assumed that there will be seven auto-renewal players on the roster - Felix Pie, Ryan Theriot, Geovany Soto, Ronny Cedeno, Mike Fontenot, Sean Marshall, and Carlos Marmol. I've allotted $500,000 for each.

Subtotal - $124,275,000

I'm pretty close to Raisin's numbers. $120.9 mil. before doing anything with Dempster, Wood, Guadin (arb.), Blanco ($.3 buyout), Johnson (arb.), or Edmonds.

If the reports of a $140 mil. payroll are true, that leaves ~$19 mil. to fill: starter, closer, backup catcher, middle reliever, and another LH bat. If you can move Marquis and some of his '09 pay, you might have $23-$26 mil. to work with - not much room.

I have a strong feeling Soriano's contract is going to be the worst one in Franchise history. (if it already wasn't)

Soriano numbers put him at the level of others guys making the same amount of money he does. How he plays from 2012-2014 will determine how good or bad the deal is. Hopefully Soriano is one of those players who still performs pretty well at 35 plus years old.

Where did you get the $2.4 number for Samardzija? I have him at $1.3.

5 yrs/$10 mil., plus a $2 mil. signing bonus amortized over 5 years. I've never seen a breakdown on his contract by year (just Googled it again). I just saw it listed as $1.6 mil. without any bonus factored in, so $1.3 mil. is certainly possible.

How do you know if the player got the signing bonuses his 1st year of the contract or if he gets a certain amount each year?? I have the payroll at about 135 million. I got Z at 17.75 not 18.75. Same with a bunch of other guys. You have 1 million added to them for some reason. Is this some signing bonus where they get 1 million each year? Don't they get the signign bonus upfront usually like Dempster will get all 4 mill this year? Unless otherwise states like Bradley getting 2 this year and 2 next.

In terms of how the money is paid, it is safe to assume that - unless it is reported otherwise - that the entire signing bonus is paid upfront. That's what I do when I calculate payroll, because I think it's more reflective of cash flow, which I imagine is of primary interest to ownership.

For the purposes of calculating luxury tax, MLB accounting spreads the signing bonus out across all of the guaranteed years of the contract (however that is defined). That's how CubFanPhilly does it.

To each his own.

I agree. The two ways to look at it are: cashflow (bonus taken in the first year because they are paid up front); and budget/luxury tax (bonus amortized over the life of the contract excluding option years). I suspect ownership looks at it from both perspectives, but cashflow is probably more important. The only reason I amortize the bonuses is that it fits better with what little the Cubs say in the media about their budget.

UPDATED 1/22:

*Assumes modest raises for pre-arb. players and pro-rates signing bonuses. The Tribune stated 2007 payroll was $120 mil. This comes within $2 mil. under these same assumptions. This total includes $6 mil. in signing bonuses. If signing bonuses are not pro-rated but included in the year signed, the total is $2 mil. lower (-$6M/+$4M for Dempster). Media has reported 2009 payroll to be around $140 mil. (with one report as high as $150 mil.).
