As mentioned, Veal was superb: 7 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 8 K, 1 HR. Colvin and Castillo each went 0 for 4 with a K.

Peoria finally under way after the long rain delay. Looks like Cliff Andersen is back off the DL.

Rough outing for Searle: 3.1 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, 6 GO-2 FO. Marcus Hatley let 2 of Searle's runs score.

Larry Suarez with his worst (but longest) outing of the season too: 4 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 4 K, 1 HR. All the runs scored 3-run HR in the 4th after 2 walks. Mesa has scored 5. Jericho Jones with a 2-RBI triple. Another day, another walk for Matt Cerda.

Marcus Hatley struggled in relief of Searle: 2.2 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, K, HBP. Plus he let 2 of Searle's 3 inherited runners score.

Julio Peña was great following Suarez: 4 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K.

Down 1, Drew Rundle robbed of extra bases in the top of the 9th. Josh Vitters just hit a double...it missed a home run by about a foot. Would have tied the game.

Veal has a FIP of 4.94. And his walks are up and his K rate has shrunk since he arrived at AA (and it's worse this year than last).

Hey Raisin -

Is there any way we could create a sticky (or at least a regular posting) where people helped to explain some of the Sabermetric stats that are valuable out there? I have no idea what a FIP is, but I would love to learn. I'm sure I could find a link, but I was hoping for a short & quick explanation of just the most important/useful stats - maybe the ones that you use fairly often to evaluate talent.

Thanks in advance.

Wow, my negative Veal comments must have done the trick!

Well, Samardzija really turned the corner after I badmouthed him. Quick somebody get started on Rich Hill and the Cubs offense.

Rich Hill is the worst pitcher in professional baseball, but even he could shut down the Cubs' offense right now.
