Not a frequent poster, but a frequent reader. I am being offered Josh Hamilton for David Wright in a basic default rules Yahoo! rotisserie league. Obviously, Hamilton's numbers are better almost all the way around save stolen bases (Hamilton 2, Wright 8). But with Hamilton's recent knee issue, I'm a little nervous to pull the trigger.

Simple question: am I a complete idiot to not take Hamilton in this trade?

My team is offensively challenged to say the least. I have no third baseman on my roster other than Aubrey Huff (who I picked up after Hafner's awful start and an injury to Konerko). If I traded Wright, I could potentially pick up Joe Crede, Edwin Encarnacion, Ryan Zimmerman, or Melvin Mora, all of which are free agents in this league.

My regular outfielders are Aaron Rowand, JD Drew, and Chris Young. So clearly, I need some offense in a bad way. I just don't want to get burned if Hamilton ends up missing significant time. I'm leaning toward pulling the trigger.

Because you have no decent backup 3B, that's a tough decision. I think Hamilton's s production is going to continue, but at the same time while David Wright hasn't been producing like he has been expected to, he is just as capable of going on an absolute tear than anyone else. So that's a really tough decision. Do you have any excess pitching you could potentially trade for a an adequate replacement at 3B?

Edit: Just notice Huff isn't actually that bad. Problem with Huff is that he hasn't been that consistent for a while, so you can't really gauge if his production this year is real or a fluke. His production this year so far though is pretty good, so I'd lean toward a yes on the deal, but at the same time Huff might be a fluke, so it's a cautious "yes"

Edit Again: Looks like Hamilton was taken out with another injury tonight. Steer clear for now, I'd say:

Josh Hamilton left Thursday's game in the second inning with an undisclosed injury.

Hamilton returned tonight after missing 1 1/2 games with left knee inflammation, but he didn't last. Whether this was related to the knee or a HBP in the first inning is unclear.

Speaking of Hamilton, isn't he the perfect sell-high candidate right now? The HR Derby and all the media hype has inflated his value quite a bit. He's obviously talented, but he's always a bit of an injury risk and he could fade down the stretch, since he has never played this much before.

About an hour after the home run derby, someone offered me Granderson and K-Rod for him. I turned it down, but I'm going to try and get more from him. Just a thought.

I have Hamilton, and I'd agree, hes most definitely a sell high candidate...BUT, when you have guys that are performing near the top in the league, you should really be targeting guys that came into this year at the top of the league, not guys like Granderson and K Rod (unless you are desperately in need of saves and its a deeper league). I'd never trade Wright for Hamilton, but there are quite a few owners out there that think if a guy has been awesome in the first half, he'll be awesome in the second half.

I agree...someone has offered me the following (I have Wright):

Wright for McLouth

Wright for Ludwick and Nady

Wright for Lee and a pitching prospect (actually not bad but I still would rather have Wright - I wanted a different prospect)

there were a few others but I forgot them...

But do you all really think Josh Hamilton is a first-half fluke? I know his home road splits are one sided, but that one side is still gargantuan. You talk about selling high, but is he really gonna become a mediocre run producer the 2nd half? It's not like he was just some guy who broke out like Ludwick.

Its not that hes going to fall off completely, BUT, he is a pretty decent injury risk as well.

Ahh, yes, the old "he's a first half player" argument. Would be noteworthy, if it were accurate.

I'd trade Wright for Hamilton, depending on league scoring and my current OF and backup 3B situations.
