On Sportscenter this morning, they said during highlights of the Yankees game that Yankees announcer Ken Singleton tried to speak Japanese and Hideki Matsui said through an interpretor that Singleton needs some practice. Greenberg went on to say casually that Matsui shouldn't be saying that to anyone seeing as he said it through an interpretor.

I just thought it was amusing.

Without knowing Matsui's tone, in making his remark, I'd guess there's nothing wrong with Greenberg's comment. I mean, really, his point would be that Matsui -- not an english speaker -- is coming down on someone trying to "brisge the gap" or in some way, be more diverse.

But really, I doubt anyone was too serious.

The most curious part in all of this is that apparently Matsui still hasn't shed the interpreter after 5+ seasons of MLB.

How much daily exposure to English does a guy need to achieve a conversational level of fluency, anyway?

Too busy focusing on his 55,000 porno video collection.

Perhaps Singleton really sucked at speaking Japanese and Matsui let him know through his interpretor. Maybe Matsui fully recognizes that he sucks at speaking English and never attempts that foreign language, unlike Singleton.

Double standard not found.

I lived in China for about two years. Trust me, switching from an asian to western based language (or vice-versa) is one of the hardest things one can do in their life. Your comment, I dont know if it was sarcastic or not, but seriously try to have some respect for how incredibly freakin' hard it is to learn a language that isn't based off your own.

I'd bet you, oh, just about anything, that you'd still suck at speaking/listening Japanese after five years. Let alone trying to read and write...

Not to mention that English is one of the hardest languages to learn.

It's not that hard when compared to tonal languages like Mandarin.
