I was really looking forward to seeing the drear and windblown 3-foot tall rough in HD. Oh well.

The biggest reason I never watch the Open is the most obvious one -- I already know what happened before it's broadcast.

Why, are you just watching the replay?

As long as I can remember it's been live. Typically it's my favorite tournament to watch all year. Last year at this time I didn't have HD so it wasn't an issue. This stinks but oh well. I'll probably just watch most of it on my older SD tv.

The best part about the British Open is getting to remember Jean Van de Velde's epic collapse in 1999 - one of the top five biggest choke jobs in the history of sports.

SportsCenter replayed a 2007 piece on Van de Velde's collapse today. It was originally made since 2007 was the first time the British Open returned to Carnoustie since 1999 and this year is the 10 year anniversary.

What I really liked was when they brought him back to the course some time after and he played the 18th hole with only a putter and made a 6, which would have won him the championship.

So I lied about not turning it on. Tom Watson leads with an opening round 65. Daly is wearing bright green pants, and dudes are hitting it out of ridiculous bunkers that would make me cry if I played there.

Goosen, i believe it was the 17th, bunker shot was unbelievable.

And Tom Watson, that dude always seems to rock n roll at the british even in his older years. he cant put more than 1-2 rounds together but damn he goes low on the first days alot.

How can you manage to make out the details through the standard def?

It might be a Law & Order episode, not sure.

I was watching it this morning and the picture looked fine, plus all your going to see in HD is the grey cloudy/rainy skies and the wind blowing things around.

I don't have HD...was just having some fun cuz I know those that do have HD get convulsions if they have to watch SD. :)

Did a draft among ten of us last night in a British Open pool. I drew Steve Stricker, Geoff Ogilvie, Ryo Ishikawa and Ross Fisher.

Stricker is 2 off the pace, Ishikawa is 4 back, I lost track of where Fisher is and Ogilvie took a big dump all over that course.

The picture was much better than I expected. It wasn't HD but wasn't close to as bad as regular SD looks on my 50" plasma. It was basically the same quality you would get watching SD on your regular tube.

Hopefully the wind picks up tomorrow.

agreed, i was pleasantly surprised by the sd quality.

i'm also disappointed in the fashion trends of some of the young players. the white pants, big belts, etc. are not attractive.

too bad it's not like CSI, they take a shitty convenience store camera and turn it into the greatest image you've ever seen just by zooming in a little.

Tiger appears to be wearing some weird body suit, with a sweater over it, and he kind of stinks today.

He wasn't all that great yesterday either was he? Missed a ton of fairways.

He lost a drive today despite having several dozen spectators help him look.

Watson just finished with a very long putt for a second round 70 and is -5, tied for the lead. Tiger is +7, tied for 107th, with Duval, Campbell and many others.

Totally rooting for Watson at this point. That would be an incredible win.

I don't see him among the leaders on sunday

Realistically, probably not. But that doesn't mean I won't be rooting for him.

Watson has been incredible. The putts on 16 and 18 were nuts. Sadly I think he'll probably fizzle out sooner than Norman did last year. The only thing is, he's playing so well tee to green that he can hang around even if he doesn't keep putting this well. To win it, he probably can't slip at all around the greens though.

Tiger was -3 today on the first 7 and last 5 combined. Complete meltdown in the middle 6 where he went +7.
