Just kinda thinking out loud here, but Jed Lowrie is a good young shortstop prospect on the Red Sox who doesn't have a place to play, because Julio Lugo is signed through 2010.

That being said, the Red Sox are pretty much always in win-now mode, so I don't think they'd want prospects for Lowrie unless they got a boatload of talent back. They also don't have much in the way of needs with their starting pitching or bullpen, and Lowrie serves as a backup infielder who is good enough to start on most teams. I'm just curious about how his situation will be resolved, because he's a good talent who deserves a shot somewhere.

I bet Lugo isn't the starter by the end of the season. He already has 11 errors and RSN is all over him. His hitting has been pretty poor as well.

What about Cedeno, Ronny? He's not bad.

The Red Sox have a big enough payroll that they can tolerate Lugo's contract on the bench (and it won't be long before they do just that).

I thought the BBTN guys were saying the Sox have someone coming off the DL in the next day or two, and Lowrie is expected to go back down to make room.

Alex Cora is the middle infielder who will be coming off the DL. Ironically, jed lowrie is better than both the starting shortstop and his soon-to-be backup.

sure lets trade for him so Felix and Ronny can have someone else their own age to talk to all game on the bench.

factoring in defense, I'm not really sure I like Lowrie much better than Ronny to give up decent prospects. that said, we really don't even have decent prospects to spare.

I don't know anything about Lowrie. If he really is a solid SS prospect, I'd offer Theriot. Sell high.

This is Theo Epstein we're talking about here, not Ned Colletti

Okay. Theriot and Ryan Harvey. ;)

jed lowrie's stats. he's average defensively.

i like lowrie to put up somewhere around a .270/.350/.450 line for the next few years, which is better than we'd do from anybody in-house.

but yeah, the red sox don't have any real needs aside from a front line starter (which the cubs aren't in position to deal away), and they're a well-run, well-managed organization that understands the value of their assets. so i don't see much way that we'd get our hands on lowrie.

I think the Red Sox would deal Lowrie, and I think they would deal him for prospects. The problem would be that I don't think they trade him without getting a pretty good prospect or two to be incumbents to their future holes. The Sox will have holes soon at 3B, LF, and C when Lowell, Manny and Varitek leave or retire within the next year or two. I think they'd also be interested in a big time relief prospects and a 2B prospect (moving Pedroia to SS) also. The Cubs can't and won't trade Vitters and Donaldson at 3B and C. But I think the Red Sox would strongly consider a trade involving Ceda and either Patterson or Colvin.

They're not above making bad trades like everyone else though. See: Julio Lugo and Coco Crisp. I supposed the Crisp deal wasn't horrible at the time, but I'm sure they'd love to take both of those back now.

They didn't acquire Lugo via trade, they just signed him as a free agent.

I doubt the Red Sox are longing for Andy Marte, the main guy they sent CLE for Crisp.
