Chase Utley is overrated. He's half a decade older than Cabrera so throw that in the dumpster. He plays in a hitter's park than makes Aaron Rowand look good and his home/road splits have reflected this. Chase Utley plays in Miguel Cabrera's stadium he's putting up Dan Uggla numbers.

Actually I'm just trying to stir the pot because I don't like it when everyone piles on like that and 5 people in a row kiss that much ass on a player.

Utley has a home OPS of .945 and a road OPS of .861. So yeah, on the road he's still a good player. Dan Uggla's career OPS is .809 and his highest ever was .819. So no, he would not put up Dan Uggla numbers.

Utley is definitely worth more than 13 mil. I would give him 15-16 mil. He's a damn good player. Utley is a lot better than Hudson is.

I don't think so. When I hear the GREAT and FEARED players of this league, Chase Utley is rarely mentioned. Utley is a DAMN good player, but like Derek Jeter, he's slightly overpaid, due to the "GRIT" factor. I said, slightly overpaid, he's more of a $10-12 mill per, and not $13 mill +.

I'm talking about the Chase Utley that right now looks like he could have a better career than Jeff Kent and Ryne Sandberg. Which one are you talking about?

http://www.baseball-reference.com/friv/scomp.cgi?I=utleych01:Chase+Utley&st=career

How about the one, who career's numbers are in line with Bill Hall ($4.8 mill this yr), Victor Martinez ($4.25 mill this yr), David Wright ($5 mill this yr) and Jose Reyes ($4 mill this yr) and Grady Sizemore ($3mill this yr)? Thes guys are in his same group (25-30 yrs old). And while they don't play the same position, it doesn't change the facts his numbers are no different then said players. So, while Utley is a damn good player, I don't view him as highly as some.

So yeah, I would not pay Utley more then $12 mill per yr. Is that simple. Utley has been overrated, just a tad. Not Jeter'd, not even Theriot'd, but slightly overrated.

And I wouldn't say he would a better career then Sandberg and Kent, I would say he would be on par with both guys. In that bandbox of a park, I could see him pass both guys, but Kent and Sandberg were more important to their teams in their heydays (Cubs and Giants), then Utley is to the Phillies.

None of those players have hit free agency yet, and their teams have decided to wait for free agency and risk paying them even more than they would make if they signed them to a big contract right now, like the Phillies did with Utley. Arbitration contracts and free agency contracts simply do not compare well, because there are definite limits on how quickly a players salary can rise in the arbitration process.

When Wright, Reyes, and Sizemore especially get to free agency, they'll make 15-18 million dollars a year, maybe even more than that. Bill Hall won't get the same type of money, but he's not nearly the same type of player as Utley. Martinez's contract will probably be highly based on what he does in the next year or two.

i'm guessing O-Dog's agent is an avid BP reader and loves the fact that WARP considers him a superior value on the field to miguel cabrera.

Hudson is good, but he is definitely not in Utley's league.

He's one of the top 2nd baseman in the league besides Utley and Phillips but totally agree with what you are saying. Good maybe even underrated, but definitely nowhere near Utley.

hudson is average, not great. check out those road splits

there's no way he's average. he's an above average hitter for a second baseman, regardless of his splits, and he's one of the better defensive 2B in the game.

I know I know about adjusting home stats for the ballpark rather than just throwing them out, but...

2007 on the road he hit 286/370/369/767, league average for ALL 2b (everyone, including backups) was 277/339/417/756

2006 on the road he hit 254/313/421/734, league average for ALL 2b was 275/333/409/742

According to UZR, O-dawg is a 12 run/150 game 2b (about 1 win a season). Hes pretty good defensively, but nothing really special.

No matter how you put it Chase Utley is far an away the best 2nd baseman in the league. Its really not even funny or close.

so are we still saying that chase utley isn't worth $13 million per year?

btw, david wright will be worth a-rod money on the open market.

Only to those teams needing a 3rd baseman. I like Wright, but if the Cubs didn't have ARam, I don't know if I would offer Wrigt more then what ARam got from the Cubs. And seeing as his numbers, while slightly better, are not, IMO, worth what ARod is getting.

David Wright: .312/.391/.538

A Rodriguez: .306/.389/.578

But then again..............I would have to reconsider. But considering Wright isn't consider a Top 5 player, I would prolly pay him closer to ManRam contract then ARods.

yeah those are wright's career numbers, which include his age 22 and 23 years. he hasn't even peaked yet. last year he was at .325/.416/.546 and i'd expect him to be close to that or better this year, which would put him close to a-rod's peak. wright's career EqA is higher than A-Rod (.315 to .312), and his 2007 WARP3 was shy of only one of A-Rod's single-season WARP3 marks. If wright isn't a top 5 player, i'd love to know who is.
