Is saving a roster spot for this "position" not the worst use of resources in organized sports? Obviously Piggy's wonderful performance yesterday got me thinking about this. But even if you get the lefty out, the righty probably would have got him out too, and then when all the righties come up you bring the righty in anyway. And it's not like the LOOGY is lights out. If he was he wouldn't be strictly a LOOGY. And then you end up pinch-hitting your back-up shortstop late in the game because your fifth or sixth outfielder is in the PCL to make room for the LOOGY.

Our situation is even more clear because our righties in the bullpen are pretty good, Wuertz historically has had a reverse platoon split, and Murton is a legit .290 Major League hitter. How long 'til Neal Cotts is up?

The LOOGY is there, like most bullpen roles, to cover the manager's behind and make him able to point to a "book" he followed.

Pigniatiello is cautionary tale No. 1,223,106 in why you don't give out roster spots based on spring training performance.

Steve Kline "I hope Prior takes a line drive to the face" Steve Kline? I don't think he's particularly enamored with the Cubs, nor is his performance worth bringing that lovely disposition onboard. I'd pass on this one.

It's not bad... if the player put in that position uses it to his advantage. Obviously, if Piggy doesn't walk both left-handed batters he faces, we're not talking about it. But it's a good way to break a younger guy in and give him a little confidence getting guys out.

Of course, if you're not even throwing strikes....

Andy Pratt, anyone?

I just think it's especially dumb when you have situations like yesterday's where the thinking is clearly "OMG, IT'S A LEFTY BATTER, THEREFORE ME MUST SUMMON THE MYTHICAL LEFTHANDED PITCHER AND NOBODY ELSE LEST WE BE DEVOURED BY THE BASEBALL GODS."

i could be wrong, but when kline was a free agent, i swear i read quotes by him talking up chicago and the cubs, and how he'd love to play for them. i could be wrong, or he could have just been talking up as many teams as possible. but i doubt kline would refuse to play for the cubs if they were the highest bidder.

Eh, Mark Prior is not a Cub anymore, and I doubt there is any real reason for his hatred for the Cubs, other than being in a heated pennant race with them when the comments were made.

That said, his stats suck
