Doug Davis has been diagnosed with thyroid cancer, team president Derrick Hall told the Arizona Republic on Friday.

Davis is going to pitch tonight anyway and should make his first few starts of the regular season. However, he will undergo surgery, probably in late April, and will be out indefinitely after that. "We’re not sure about the timetable after that," Hall said. "We’re deeply saddened and concerned for Doug but we’re still in the process of collecting facts and applying that to timing." It sounds like it was caught early and the prognosis is very good. When Davis is sidelined, the Diamondbacks will probably go with Edgar Gonzalez in the rotation, though they also have Yusmeiro Petit as a fallback.

Dear God,

During 2006 I know I said some really mean things about Doug Davis because he really took a step backwards from 2005 and cost my fantasy team. At one point I'm pretty sure that I said "I wish (Doug Davis) was dead."

It looks like he's going to be ok. Thanks for the try.

Mad propers,

He'll be in my prayers. Cancer is no fun-- especially the chemo. I had colon cancer in 2006, what a nightmare but I survived only to have the Cancer come back in a different part of my body this past October...hopefully God will help me kick this cancer too.

and the diamondbacks are not going to be the team they were last year

i wish people would stop picking them to win the division

bp disagrees.

they did trade for dan haren and have a lot of young hitters who are likely to improve. i know they were lucky in terms of their pythag, but i'd expect them to be a better team this year.
