Which pitcher has better numbers since the 2006 trade? Granted Maddux has played in pitcher's parks, but the stats were surprising.

A comparison of the stats of Zambrano and Greg Maddux since August of 2006, after the Cubs traded Maddux to the Los Angeles Dodgers for shortstop Cesar Izturis, indicates there's little difference between the young power pitcher and the 41-year-old finesse pitcher.

Zambrano is a combined 22-17 with a 3.94 ERA, allowing 27 home runs with 235 strikeouts and 134 walks. But in the same span with the Dodgers and San Diego, Maddux is a combined 20-14 with a 3.91 ERA, allowing 20 home runs with 140 strikeouts and 39 walks. Considering the differences in their ages, their salaries and the velocity on their fastballs, one would think Zambrano's numbers would be significantly better than a starter the Cubs obviously thought was at the end of his career.

One of Greg's biggest problems was that he gave up a lot of HR, if I remember correctly. He went to a park where HR were a lot harder to hit. This is the result.

PetCo has made a pretty substantial difference for him the past two years.

Most definitely.

The home/away homerun totals are not that different. The 2006 stats need to be divided between the home field as Wrigley and the home field as Dodger Stadium.

Yeah the HR weren't as different as I would have expected - but the fact still remains that he pitched far better in Petco than anywhere else.

Plus the fact that Z has basically doubled Maddux in K's

And more than tripled him in walks.

Just sayin'...

we should also consider that maddux is old and could die soon and then it basically doesn't matter, unless you're implying that z will be outpitched by a corpse----even the corpse of a hall of famer.

this z skepticism is mind-bottling.

I love Z, but those ever-growing walk and HR numbers can't be ignored.

By die, do you mean retire, or is there something you know that we don't?

It's a fair point.

Even with the comfort of Petco, Maddux was never really anything less than good.

Damn you Hendry. Cesar Izturis?! :flame:

He's a groundball pitcher so it might not matter that much. But isn't Maddux too with his sinker?

Z isn't anymore, hes middle of the pack. Maddux gets more GBs but I wouldnt categorize him as a GB pitcher.

In 2007, Z was 23rd amond 76 NL pitchers with a GB/FB ratio of 1.37.

In 2003, Z was 6th among 77 NL pitchers who pitched 100 innings with a GB/FB ratio of 2.28.

He was also a much better pitcher then.
