Ryan Dempster, who starts Thursday's opener, hasn't been a starting pitcher since 2003 in Cincinnati, before undergoing elbow reconstruction surgery that August.

Wait, didn't Demp start a few games for us - or am I crazy??? I thought I remembered the Dempster experiment ending poorly and him quickly returning to the pen . . .

He did, in 2005. I had the unfortunate chance to see him pitch one of those. Actually he didn't do horrible, he only allowed 1 unearned run IIRC. (thanks Burnitz)

He made a start, but I'm not sure that qualifies as being a starting pitcher. Didn't the fatter Jon Lieber (David Weathers) make a start against the Cubs in 04? If he attempted to become a regular starting pitcher again, I think you can safely say that he hasn't been a starting pitcher since the late 90's.

It might be simple semantics, but I think that if you are the starting pitcher then you are a starting pitcher . . .

He made 6 starts that year. I'd be surprised if he makes it past 4 this time around

I was also at this game. I had decent seats, too, which is unusual for me. Burnitz really was awful that game - not just the crucial error, but he also came up to the plate in key positions and repeatedly looked awful.

I think what the article was insinuating was that Dempster hasn't had a secure spot as a starting pitcher in a rotation since 2003, but I could be wrong

I agree (I guess), but that's clearly NOT what Sullivan said . . . he said Demp hadn't STARTED since '03 - and HE HAS! Dumb Sullivan . . .

I'd blocked out the Jeromy Burnitz era until now. Thanks.

I was at that game too. He did pitch pretty well that day.
