Part of the fun/torture of the off-season, of course, is all the trade suggestions in the Transactions section. Two of the names frequently mentioned are Sean Gallagher and Sean Marshall.

I think Marshall makes a pretty decent bottom-of-the-rotation starter. But what about Gallagher? There seems to be a lot of love for this guy. Could someone compare these two re: quality of stuff, upside, probability of attaining that upside, how they fit in with the present rotation, etc.?

Thanks!

There seems to be some doubt as to whether Marshall can stay healthy for a full season. I think his upside is a #4 starter, because although he has great control, he doesn't have the stuff to be more than slightly above average for a full season. Gallagher, on the other hand, has a plus curve and a pretty good fastball. He is definitely the less-proven of the two, but with a considerably higher upside. Marshall's value is as a spot starter/long relief guy IMO so it depends on what the GM in question is really looking for.

At best, Gallagher would give you a decent 2/3 guy in the rotation. However, while he has some major league experience under his belt, he advanced much further than was expected of him this season. His mentality on the mound is intimidating and he's got a very good feel for the game. However, he still is rough around the edges and could use some work in AAA next season. I'll also point out that AAA (for whatever reason) has been unusually rough on Cubs' pitching prospects in the past few years.

I think Gallagher's upside is higher than Marshall's, but Marshall will probably perform better than Gallagher next season. Down the road, I like Gallagher's potential over Marshall's. It's just a matter of whether Gallagher will ever reach a higher ceiling than Marshall.

If Gallagher can learn to control the strike zone a little better he should be a pretty decent pitcher down the road.

My question: Who has more trade value?
