Ken Rosenthal's latest column suggested that the Twins might reconsider trading Santana and possibly try to be competitive in 2008:

"For Smith, that could mean adding a shortstop, third baseman and center fielder to his core — no small feat. But it's a manageable quest if his goal is to compete next season rather than deconstruct".

I wonder if the Dodgers and Twins could get together:

Kemp, Laroche, Hu, Kershaw/Billinsley for Santana. That would be a real blockbuster, but would solve a few of the Twins problems and give them a real shot at 2009 and beyond.

That would be one heck of a deal for the Twins. With them already getting Young. Adding LaRoche, Hu and Kemp would give them one heck of a lineup in a couple of years. Then adding Kershaw/Billingsley would just be incredible.

Isn't the reported twins asking price Kemp, LaRoche, and Kershaw? No need to add Hu or upgrade from Kershaw to Billingsley to get it done. And the dodgers aren't willing to do that. I'm guessing Kershaw will be the sticking point for both teams. This would have been a whole lot easier if Elbert didn't have shoulder surgery.

Yeah, they wouldn't need to do that. I don't know if any single player in MLB could justify that type of offer.

Upgrade from Kershaw to Billingsley? I've heard a lot of talk that teams prefer Kershaw.

Yeah.

Those trade ideas are ridiculous considering when considering what NYY and Boston is offering.

Heck, the Twins would be wise to take a lesser package from the Dodgers. It's not going to help them much to give the Red Sox/Yankees the keys to World Series just to get bounced out of the playoffs in the first round if they make it.

It seems like a lot of times the Yankees disposed of the Twins in the playoffs handily. If I were them I wouldn't be so quick to hand them the best pitcher in baseball, especially for some kind of high-risk package centered around guys like Melky, Tabata, Horne, and Marquez.

I wouldn't doubt it. IMO the risk/reward ratio on Billingsley is better.

Agreed. I don't understand why teams continue to deal with the Yankees. Sure, money is great. But, if it keeps a team from getting deep into the playoffs, find a different team to pillage.

If I'm Minnesota, as soon as the Yankees state "We will not part with Hughes or Chamberlain", I say, "pleasure talking to you, call me when you change your mind, good bye".

I'd also add "say, do you have Theo Epstein's cell number handy?"

Given that Kershaw is like 15 years old, I would have to think he is the better prospect.

The Twins don't have to be in any hurry. If they keep pitting NYY vs. Boston, I wonder how high they can get the package upped. I think it would be hilarious if by February NYY was offering Chamberlain, Hughes, Cano and Cabrera and Boston was offering Ellsbury, Lester, Buchholz and Lowrie and Minnesota was still holding out.

Thats the whole point, theres a ton of risk with Kershaw (although a bigger reward), and much less with Billingsley, although theres a lower ceiling. Kershaw is a prospect, Billingsley is a known commodity.
