Curt Schilling is a FA. Under what circumstances would you consider making him an offer? I realize -and agree- that offense should be the biggest priority but having another SP better than Marquis and Marshall would certainly make the Cubs more of a force- especially during the playoffs.

With all of the teams that are desperate for starters in a very weak free agent market, I can't believe the Cubs would match their offers.

I can't imagine any circumstances in which I'd want the Cubs to give Schilling the money it's going to take to sign him.

He is easily my least favorite player in MLB. I think he is good and would get over it. I agree we probably dont have the money to get it done though.

Josh Beckett, for my money. And little of it has to do with wearing us out in '03. He's just a self-important jerk.

Kinda reminds me of a young Curt Shilling

That said, what is your problem with old, grizzled Curt Shilling? Aside from his bloody-sock lore and endearment to Boston fans everywhere, I don't really mind him.

Marshall 2007: 3.92 ERA, 1.374 WHIP

Schilling 2007: 3.87 ERA, 1.245 WHIP

While Schilling was better than Marshall this year, he's not likely to get any better whereas Marshall is likely to get better. Not to mention that Marshall is going to be making the minimum while Schilling will probably command $10M per year for a couple years. I don't think Schilling is worth the upgrade over Marshall which is who he would likely be replacing as I don't see Marquis getting removed from the rotation.

Also of note:

Marshall had a 5.84 K/9 this year. His FIP was 4.58. Hes never pitched over 150 innings. Don't expect Marshall to get better from what he did this year.

Plus, Schiling compiled his numbers in the AL East while Marshall compiled his in the NL Central.

I really dont know much about his politics. I started disliking him when he was in the World Series with the Phillies. It has only gone down hill since.

I expect Marshall to pitch better, though his ERA may get worse.

I'm for trading him because I'm not sure he'll ever be durable enough to last a whole season, though.

I don't know if he'll pitch much better, but yeah, you said what I meant. I don't think the result of his pitching will be better. I agree with the durability. I believe he wasn't dropped from the rotation due to Lou or Hendry being displeased with his performance. I hope they were just being cautious, but due to the fact we were fighting for our playoff lives, most likely he was injured. I'm glad they kept it under wraps though because with his sparkling ERA this year, its time to SELL SELL SELL.
