Did Len say he will be announcing some playoff series? I know he said Bob would be announcing one, but I didn't know if he would be doing some too. Anybody know?

he isn't announcing, only contributing to WGN and doing the blog and Podcast. Brenly will be on TBS

Why not Len? Does he not have the same clout as Brenly? They work well together as a team.

I think the Fox announcers for Saturday's Braves-Brewers game (Levin-Girardi, IIRC) said that Chip Caray will do some games alongside Tony Gwynn. Anybody else catch this?

Yep, I heard that as well. Gwynn and Caray called today's Braves game, actually.

Bob was awesome in the post season in 1998. I personally think it's great when broadcasters don't have a problem saying 'Javy Lopez is setting up with both feet outside the catchers box and his mitt at his chest. it doesn't matter if Glavine/Maddux hits the mitt, it's not a strike.'

I hope the Chipster isn't announcing any Cubs games in the playoffs. I think he is a pretty bad announcer.

He wasn't that bad. It took me a while to get used to him in '98, but once he got comfortable in the booth and stopped trying to be Harry, he was fine.

He just says too much goofy stuff. I may think some of it was funny if I was 10. I'll take Len over him anyday.

this board was generally negative toward Chip during his tenure as the Cubs' television play-by-play man, but the proliferation of MLB-AM services and cable/satellite sports packages has revealed to many of us just how brutal a majority of professional baseball announcers are. I'd say that the criticism heaped on Chip by this board a few years back was deserved, but that his overall game was much better than we realized. Chip's place in broadcasting history is very forgettable, but surprisingly enough he is superior to a majority of his contemporaries. Edited by SaorsaDaonnan

Chip and Steve were a very good team in the booth.

There's really no excuse for Len not announcing. He's a hell of a lot better than most of the idiots doing national games. *cough*brenneman*cough*

- Chip/Gwynn (They're doing the NLCS too and are the #1 team on TBS)

- Ted Robinson/Joe Simpson

- Don Orsillo/Steve Stone

- Dick Stockton/Bob Brenly

Per the Len & Bob blog, Bob is going to be joining Chip/Gwynn for the NLCS as well.

I agree. I realize that Chip is better than the majority of announcers out there, but I still think he is very bad. There really aren't that many good announcers out there. This is one more reason I feel lucky the Cubs have an announcer as good as Len. He seems very genuine during his calls, and he also brings alot of knowledge to the booth.

other than occasionally seeming too excited for the competition, I never had a big problem with Chip until 2004 when his jabs at Ronnie seemed to get vindictive and he and Stone wouldn't let their feud with the players go. regardless of who was right or wrong, they had the microphones and wouldn't let it die.

I met Chip once. home openner in 2004. I had just gotten tickets and was getting back on the el, he was getting off the el. he gave my brother and I a big smile and a jovial "Happy New Year!"

The Cubs Braves game where Soriano hit 3 homers summarized why I dislike Chip:

"An ill wind blows from the north, and it's name is Alfonso Soriano."

Let me preface this by saying yes I'm a Brewer fan but yes I am cheering for the Cubs come playoff time because there is no other NL team I'm a big fan of and I"d rather keep it in the division.

I'm just curious do Cubs fans like Ron Santo as an announcer or do you think he's as bad as I do? He's nowhere near as bad as the White Sox guys but I still can't stand listening to him.

I mean I hate the Brewers TV announcers so I know not everyone always loves the home town guys, just curious if he is well thought of or not?

I think the general consensus is we know he's terrible, and understand how non-Cubs fans could have a hard time listening to him, but love him anyway.

People are pretty split on Santo. Nobody thinks he's a good announcer per say, but many people enjoy his fan-like take on the game. You have to realize that you're not going to get any analysis with him, or any real insight, but you'll get somebody invested into the team. Kinda like watching the game with you crazy uncle. Pat Hughes works wonders to make Ron tolerable. With an average PBP man, Ron would be really annoying to Cubs fans too I think.

yeah, santo is the everyday man who bleeds cubbie blue - he just happens to be a Hall of Fame (i don't care how inept the voters are) player with the same team. He's a total homer, goes through the ups (few) and downs (many) that we cub fans all go through, and he openly roots for the cubs. but i guess when something great happens and you hear ronnie celebrating, you feel happy, because he's probably the biggest cub fan who's ever lived, and you feel like he deserves good things coming his way.

Pat Hughes should make it to the Hall of Fame just for his work with Ron. Pat makes Ron a lot better than he would be otherwise because he plays off of Ron incredibly well.

I bet if the Cubs are on TBS during the NLDS, we'll get Robinson/Simpson, seeing as that's the only pair without Cubs' ties, either formerly or presently.
