I suggest a forum (I think it deserves more than a thread) where people can ask basic or complex baseball questions and have them answered in a non-confrontational way by some of the more baseball and/or stat savvy posters. It could also serve as a reference for people who just can't quite remember what ERA+ measures or what GIDP means etc so posters can look there before feeling stupid.

While I cannot say this has been a big problem so far, it could be a nice feature to add.

What do people think?

I also think it would be a good idea. It would be a good way for some posters to learn baseball things in an easy way, and I ultimately think it would lead to better discussions, debate, etc on the site as more people would understand what was going on, etc.

Not that I'm saying there are people here who aren't able to follow conversations, but even I get lost and kind of glaze over in the sabremetric-heavy discussions because all those numbers don't mean anything to me.

There could also be a stickied post or two containing the definitions of some of the more..."unique" sabermetric stats...which shows how they are figured and what they are supposed to help predict.

Oh really, then take time out of your busy damn schedule and explain it to me rather than insulting me for not knowing stats that aren't even officially accepted.

if you disregard it as "crap", why should people bother to explain it to you?

I like this idea, though I think having a Stickied thread is a better way to do it.

And since I'm here, let me ask this question... the phrase "purchased his contract", what exactly does it mean? Do the Cubs literally buyout the contract, and give the minor leaguer all of the money he would've been due the rest of the year, as well as what he makes at league minimum in the big leagues? And sorry, I'm referring to when a big league team calls up a minor leaguer.

That was terribly worded, but hopefully you get what I'm saying.

I'm not sure about all the details, but I think it's mainly just a procedural move. When a player isn't on the 40-man roster his contract is actually owned by the minor league team. Therefore when the major league team wants to call him up they actually need to purchase his contract from the minor league team in order to have his rights (the term "selected" is also sometimes used). Conversely, if a player is on the 40-man roster but has been optioned to the minor leagues, the major league does own his contract, so if he's called up the term "recalled" is used.

That's right. The big league squad can purchase the contract from the minor league team for a small cost.

i can be nice when i want to. being mean just allows me to figure out whose worth talking to. if you cave in usually youre not worth taking seriously. if you ignore it, i dont talk down to you. you have to show me youre worth talking to. is there really anything wrong with holding people accountable?

Good God, get over yourself. No one really likes you. Understand that.

I'd prefer that you express your points without saying something bad/personal to the poster you are responding too. Trying to get the person upset to expose their weakness is a decent strategy but please try to do so without the insults. Hold them accountable that's fine but just try to play by the rules of the board and attack the post by saying why you disagree instead of saying that was dumb or a comment like that. You're an intelligent person, can't you do that simple thing?
