I'm calling a Vitters HR tonight.

Any one know if he projects as a third baseman, what's his D look like?

Vitters is an average defender but not bad for his age/experience level. He projects to improve though there are a few concerns that he might have to move.

Angel Guzman starting again for Mesa today, getting a 1-2-3 first inning. He might be ready move up after one or two more outings at Mesa.

Peoria was down 9-0 at the 7th inning stretch and have scored 9 in the 7th and 8th to tie it up.

Josh Donaldson is having a huge game - 2/2 with a double and a homer.

Here comes Cedeno again. He still could be a useful MLB starter, but I don't see it happening in Chicago. He's had his chances, and he probably has burned his chances here to develop into a starting SS. Besides in September (when he'll just ride the bench anyway as a callup) should the Cubs just let him stay in AAA next year, get some great numbers out of him, and then try to trade him mid-season?

They can't let him stay in AAA next season as he's used up all his options.

The Boise game is going to the 12th, tied at 2. It's so late that the bat boys had to go home (it's past bed time!!) and the equipment manager is acting as the bat boy.

That's right, I forgot about that. Maybe I'm wrong, but I can't imagine Lou will be too happy about keeping him as the backup IF on his squad next year. I cannot see them exposing Cedeno to be picked up, so if he is still a Cub at ST, I think he probably makes the team. He's a prime candidate to be traded in the offseason though.

Boise lost 3-2 in 12. In the bottom of the 12th, Josh Donaldson got a single with one out and went all the way to third base on a wild pitch but was left stranded when Dylan Johnston and Kyler Burke both struck out looking.

Heh, the link to the Iowa wrap-up had the headline as "Cobs Come Back for 8-2 Win."

IowaCubs.com"]Cubs Come Back for 8-2 Win

Win on the Field and Forfeit Give Cubs Two Wins in a Day

By Deene Ehlis / http://www.iowacubs.com

Iowa picked up two wins in one day, even though the Cubs played only one game.

On the field, Iowa batted around for the twenty-second time this season, scoring five runs in the seventh inning to down Memphis 8-2 Tuesday night at Autozone Park. The Redbirds had a 2-0 lead going into the seventh on Joe Mather's two run homer in the fourth inning.

Off the field, the Cubs were awarded a rare forfeit win when the PCL announced Memphis had used an ineliglble player, Kelly Stinnett, in a Redbird win 7-6 August 18 in Des Moines. Stinnett had been placed on Major League Baseball's restricted list on July 1 by St. Louis. The PCL and MLB ruled Stinnett's activation for the August 18th game was impermissible and Memphis had to forfeit the game.

Back on the field, in the Cubs seventh inning comeback, former Redbird John Nelson tied the game with a two-run homer. Tony Richie broke the tie with a two run single and Jake Fox capped off the scoring with an RBI groundout. Ronny Cedeno led the Cubs offense with four hits, falling a homerun shy of the cycle. Iowa manager Buddy Bailey was excited about Cedeno's performance, "Ronny had a tremendous game tonight...he had four hits, made all the plays and he was in the middle of all the scoring opportunities."

Clay Rapada (7-1) picked up the win in relief with two innings of work. Five Iowa pitchers combined for no walks and eleven strikeouts. Mark Worrell (3-2) took the loss for Memphis.

Geovany Soto was 0-4 dropping his average to .353.

Koyie Hill, after clearing the waiver process, appeared in the Iowa dugout in the eighth inning and delivered an RBI single in the ninth as a pinch-hitter. Hill was designated for assignment by Chicago on August 20th.

SmokiesBaseball.com"]Smokies solidify playoff hopes with 7-5 win

SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. – Some timely hitting and outstanding defensive plays late in the game propelled the Tennessee Smokies to a 7-5 win over the Chattanooga Lookouts, and further enhanced their playoff positioning. Nate Spears crushed a two-run home run to give the Smokies the lead for good, and Kyle Reynolds went three for five while driving in two key runs. With the win, the Smokies distanced themselves further from Chattanooga and Carolina in their hunt for the 2nd half North Division title.

The Smokies turned the tables on the Lookouts tonight by jumping out to the early lead, something that has not happened often during this series. A two-out rally in the first inning plated three runs for Tennessee, beginning with a Kyle Reynolds RBI double to score Casey McGehee. Issmael Salas did the rest of the damage against Lookouts starter Steve Kelly (0-3) with a two-run single, and the Smokies jumped out to an early 3-0 lead.

Tennessee added to their lead in the bottom half of the second inning by playing good fundamental baseball. Sam Fuld crushed a double off the right field wall with one out, just missing a home run by about a foot. Jorge Cortes hit a hit fly ball into deep right center that was caught for an out, but Fuld wisely tagged up at second and advanced to third on the play. That turned out to be a key play, as Fuld came home on a wild pitch with Tyler Colvin at bat, and the Smokies had a 4-0 advantage.

Berg (7-7) settled in and pitched five scoreless innings to preserve the lead for the Smokies. Through five innings, Berg gave up just four hits. The bottom half of the fifth was Berg’s undoing however, as he was touched up for two runs to put Chattanooga back in the game. Danny Dorn hit a two-run home run to pull the Lookouts to within two runs at 4-2, and also was the beginning of the end for Berg. Rocky Roquet came on in relief with the bases loaded to strike out Sean Henry and end the Chattanooga threat.

With the score 4-3 in favor of the Smokies in the seventh inning, the Smokies desperately needed a run or two to put Chattanooga away. They got just that thanks to Spears, who launched a mammoth two-run home run over the right field fence to extend the Smokies lead to 6-3.

But the Lookouts would not go quietly. With Geoff Jones on in relief, Chattanooga benefited from a throwing error by Jones, which scored two runs to pull within 6-5 of the Smokies. Jones was able to get out of the rest of the inning unscathed, and benefited from an outstanding defensive play by shortstop Gary Cates to end the inning. The Smokies offense picked up the team again with a run in the bottom of the eighth on a Reynolds RBI single to give Tennessee a little breathing room at 7-5.

In the ninth inning, things were not looking good for the Smokies. After two consecutive singles off Jones, the Lookouts had runners at first and second with nobody out. But Craig Tatum ripped a line drive fielded beautifully at third by Reynolds, who turned a 5-4-3 double play, which was very nearly a triple play to end the game. Jones then retired Enrique Cruz to end the game and record his eighth save of the season.

BoiseHawks.com"]Spokane Beats Hawks in 12, 3-2

The Spokane Indians beat the Boise Hawks Tuesday night in 12 innings, 3-2. Chrstian Santanna drove in Renny Ossuna with the go-ahead run in the top of the 12th and Tommy Hunter shutdown the Hawks in the last half. Hunter got the win with two innings of work.

Josh Donaldson had three of the Hawks' six

Maestri's stats as a reliever are stunning.

No kidding.

Overall: 78.2 IP, 2.40 ERA, 74 K/15 BB, .192 BAA

As a reliever: 63.1 IP, 1.28 ERA, 64 K/11 BB, .162 BAA

Wish they'd have bumped him up to high-A earlier in the season though. I think he and Papelbon will hit both Daytona and Tennessee next year as relievers.
