Great to see Gooz getting some action again after his earlier set back. He should be ready in a few weeks which should be nice for the big league pen.

Iowa was officially eliminated from the playoffs, joining Daytona and Mesa on the eliminated list.

IowaCubs.com"]Cubs Win Wild 9-8 Contest Sunday

Iowa Wins Three of Five in Series

http://www.iowacubs.com

John Nelson's solo homer in the eighth inning snapped a tie and gave Iowa a 9-8 victory over New Orleans Sunday afternoon at Zephyr Field.

The Cubs took an early 3-0 lead on a third inning three-run homerun by Geovany Soto, his 24th of the season. New Orleans then scored the game's next eight runs and led 8-3 going into the seventh inning.

In the seventh, the Cubs batted around and took advantage of the Zephyrs only error of the game, by shortstop Anderson Hernandez, and scored five unearned runs to tie the game. Ronny Cedeno's three-run triple was the inning's key hit.

Neal Cotts (2-2) picked up the win in relief and Rocky Cherry gained his seventh save by registering the games final four outs.

With the win, the Cubs took three of five from the Zephyrs in a series described as weird by Iowa manager Buddy Bailey, "It was weird, the whole thing. We stole one last night and today...they call it the Big Easy, but it (the series) wasn't easy."

Saturday, Iowa won 2-1 as New Orleans left 13 men on base and held Iowa to five singles. Sunday, the Z's outhit Iowa 12-6, but left nine on base.

Soto finished two for five and upped his league best average to .358. With four RBI, Soto has 103 for the season.

SmokiesBaseball.com"]Smokies woes continue in 5-2 loss to Chattanooga

Sevierville, TN – The North Division of the Southern League is still up for grabs with eight games remaining in the season, and the Tennessee Smokies continue to be in the chase despite a disheartening 5-2 loss at Smokies Park tonight. The Chattanooga Lookouts benefited from two home runs from Adam Rosales to power past the Smokies and into a tie for second place in the North Division.

For the second consecutive game, Chattanooga jumped out to an early lead by scoring a run in the first inning. Rosales crushed his first home run of the game to deep center field to give the Lookouts a 1-0 lead. The Lookouts extended their lead in the third inning, plating two more runs thanks largely in part to an RBI double by former Smokie Caonabo Cosme off of starting pitcher Mark Holliman (10-11).

The Smokies struck back in the bottom half of the fourth inning to get into the game. With Jemel Spearman on second and Issmael Salas on first, Robinson Chirinos slapped an RBI single to left field to pull Tennessee to within 3-1. Sam Fuld then ripped an RBI single of his own to score Salas, and the Smokies were down by a score of 3-2.

Unfortunately, the Smokies would draw no closer in this contest, as Chattanooga benefited from solid pitching from starter Carlos Fisher (5-9), as well as their bullpen who pitched four innings of scoreless work. Rosales smashed his second home run of the night in the seventh inning, his 12th of the season, to give Chattanooga a 5-2 advantage.

Tennessee mounted a late comeback charge however, as they have in several games at Smokies Park this year. With Josh Roenicke on to pitch for Chattanooga in the ninth, pinch hitter Gary Cates drew a leadoff walk, followed by a single off the bat of Casey McGehee. With one out, Spearman walked the bases loaded to put the winning run at the plate in Salas. But Salas grounded into a 1-2-3 double play on a comebacker to the pitcher to end the game. Roenicke notched his seventh save of the season in pitching the scoreless ninth.

DaytonaCubs.com"]Schappert Stuns Devil Rays in 4-1 Win

Cubs' Starter Throws Nine Innings; Offense Compliments

By: Matt Martinez (Paul Scahppert photo/Tommy Proctor)

[DAYTONA BEACH, FL] On another successful Great White Welding Broadcast from the Stands Sunday, the Daytona Cubs were lifted past the Vero Beach Devil Rays by their starting hurler, Paul Schappert. The Cubs cruised to victory as solid defense, timely hitting and marvelous pitching equated to a 4-1 win.

The aforementioned Scahppert was stunning, allowing only one run on four base hits while striking out five and walking two in the nine-inning outing. The single run came in the first inning on an RBI double shot off the bat of Sergio Pedroza to claim a short-lived 1-0 lead for the D-Rays.

The Cubs charged back in the bottom of the second as Jeffrey Rea launched a one out double into the gap. Yusuf Carter promptly knocked him in with a single and stole second and advanced to third on a errant through. Billy Mottram lifted a sacrifice fly to the outfield to score Carter and give Daytona a 2-1 lead.

Goose eggs were put on the board until the bottom of the eighth when Brian Dopirak squirted a two-run single through the infield to score Matt Matulia and Steve Clevenger to advance the lead to 4-1 Daytona.

Schappert locked down the Devil Rays in the top of the ninth to secure his third win of the year and the only nine-inning complete game for any Daytona Cub in 2007.

BoiseHawks.com"]Hawks Pound Bears, 10-4

YAKIMA, WA -- The Boise Hawks beat the Yakima Bears Sunday night, 10-4. Josh Donaldson paced an 11-hit attack with three hits and three RBI's. Leadoff hitter Tony Thomas was on base four times and scored four runs. The Hawks broke open a one-run game with six runs in the ninth inning. Luis Bautista, Kyler Burke (2), Dylan Johnston and Jovan Rosa all drove in runs in the ninth inning as the Hawks sent 10 batters to the plate.

Ryan Acosta, making his first start for the Hawks, pitched three scoreless innings. Audi Santana gave up three unearned runs in the sixth. Yuri Higgins pitched two shutout innings and Steve Vento gave up one run in the ninth.

With the win the Hawks remain within a game and one half of first place in the Eastern Division of the Northwest League.

Knoxville News-Sentinel"]The Smokies are their own worst enemy.

“Some guys seem to have forgotten their approach to hitting with guys on base,” manager Pat Listach said.

He called out cleanup hitter Kyle Reynolds, who was 0-for-5.

“He didn’t throw him a strike and he struck out on three pitches,” Listach said. “They have to understand when they have a pitcher on the ropes, they’ve got to make him throw strikes and not help him out.”

Is it me or has Ryan Harvey been doing well lately?

he's been hitting pretty well, but his plate discipline is still atrocious, so i'm taking it with a grain of salt

Hey, he took a walk last week!

I was a bit surprised when Ryan Acosta was bumped up to Boise because he was primarly a SS in high school and the scouting reports said that his breaking stuff had a ways to go. I thought he would be especially raw and figured the NWL next season would be a natural progression for him; I'm quite pleased with his successful Boise debut yesterday.

I'm sure Hendry will set Listach straight. "We want guys that swing the bat"

Announcers on Yakima radio had Acosta 90-93 on the radio and said " he had a pretty good slider".

Great to hear! Looks like you might be right about Acosta starting in Peoria next year while craig and I didn't think it possible.
