If you go to the Cubs.com page, and read the synopsis of the preview for tonight's game, it says Eric Patterson is expected to get the callup. It doesn't, however, mention it at all in the article itself, which is weird. I was pretty surprised when I saw it.

Epatt? We have to be nearing the record for most people added to the 40-man in one season.

And we clearly have a shortage of middle infielders.

Epatt has been playing some CF lately. Still have to wonder why they wouldn't just bring up Pie.

I wasn't aware of that. That just makes it even more silly for Murt to be taking up a roster spot.

Exactly...why bring up a guy to play him out of position, when your top propsect that you would trade at the deadline is ready to come up and learn at the major league level?

I'm guessing the blurb on cubs.com might be a typo because it says "top prospect Eric Patterson". Last I checked Pie was our top prospect.

A couple half-baked reasons:

He can play IF and OF

He's a "leadoff hitter" and they don't want to move Theriot from the 2 spot.

They plan on playing him at 2B so his OF ability doesn't matter. Or he's taking Fontenot's role with DeRosa being a full-time OF while Soriano's gone.

"Top Prospect" isn't the same as "The Top Prospect." You could have several top prospects although that usually wouldn't apply to the Cubs.

Maybe they're bringing up Patterson as part of the deal for Dye. KWilliams might want to save on the plane ticket from Iowa.

This is about the only thing that half way makes sense to me...

If they don't want to mess with the line up they could go

Patterson 2b

Theriot SS

Lee 1b

Ramirez 3b

Floyd/Murton RF

Jones CF

DeRosa LF

Kendall C

Pitcher....

Otherwise, it all would sure seem to fit a lot better with Pie.

Good lord, that's the worst defensive outfield in professional baseball. DeRosa needs to be playing 2B.

yes...yes...yes...and this is why pagan should be optioned down for pie

then we can option down hill for soto...

oh, to live in a perfect world

Someone already hit on this...but I think the reasons they'd go with Patterson before Pie are 1) he's a top of the order guy and they don't think Pie is and 2) Pie may still be bothered by the leg...

Personally, I want Murton to get the ABs in LF...if they want to play DeRosa in RF and let Patterson play 2b, fine.

That's my guess. Fontenot's crappy July has probably put him on very thin ice and Lou appears to like DeRosa in the OF. We'll see a lot games with Floyd in LF, Jock/Pagan in CF, and DeRosa in RF. Murt will continue to enjoy the games from the dugout.

Just like Gallagher, EPatt doesn't have to be added to the 40-man til after next season. There are going to be some interesting 40-man decisions this offseason because the Cubs added so many people.

If Pie isn't all the way back physically, why not just call up Buck Coats.

DeRosa in RF pains me. He hasn't looked any better out there recently than Floyd
By all account I've read (besides fans here), DeRosa is an above average defensive outfielder.

he has seemed a little overwhelmed the last couple of games

Score is saying that Patterson is coming up.

I'm guessing he's coming up to play outfield since the Cubs don't seem to like his defense at 2b and we have 15 second basemen on the team already.
