Sullivan (I know, I know) speculates this monrning that Terry Ryan has to listen to offers for both Santana and Nathan b/c they will each get enormous deals after their contracts expire next season.

I'd sell my soul to get Santana.

What would the Cubs have to give?

Top prospect(s) and a proven pre-arbitration ML regular. The Cubs don't have what it would take.

Probably not, but how about Hill, Gallagher, Marmol and Pie? That would give the Twins a replacement closer or a top-flight set up guy if they re-up Nathan (Marmol), two starters, and a replacement for Tori Hunter (Pie) who would very likely thrive on the Metrodome turf.

Our rotation:

Z

Santana

Lilly

Marshall

Marquis

Hot damn!!!!

The cubs aren't even in the atmosphere of what it will take to get santana. Even if you trade Hill, Marshall, Pie, and Patterson, i'm not convinced there wouldn't be an exponentially better deal from a prospect rich team.

Santana would fetch a whole lot more than the Cubs can offer. He is one of the top pitchers in baseball, I have no idea why the Twins would want to trade him. The Cubs would have to trade like Lee and top prospects to get him. And I might actually do that trade, since filling a 1B is alot easier than getting a top pitcher.

one of the top pitchers is baseball? How about just the top pitcher in baseball. And no, the Twins aren't going to trade for a first baseman who doesn't hit for as much power and is making $10M per year, when they've got a younger player who's likely to be better over the next 4+ years.

Paul Sullivan should just call it quits. Why would the Twins trade Santana this year, when they have him next year as well. If they're worried about being able to resign him, see what's going on with the team come July of next year then pull the trigger if you're going nowhere fast. Duh.

the cubs aren't the yankees or the red sox. carrying lee, soriano, ramirez, lilly, marquis (yuk on that one) and hopefully zambrano will require that they continue to develop and keep their young, inexpensive pitchers like marshall and hill--while making sure that pie and soto get their chances with the big club. that's the economics of the game, and unfortunately, the cubs aren't above it, even in the unlikely event that cuban becomes their owner.

as strange as it sounds, i'd imagine that both marshall and hill at their salaries are probably just as valuable as santana at what he will require.

keep the young, cheap pitchers, continue to develop gallagher as a starter, sign zambrano to a long term deal and there's no reason why the cubs would have to empty their system for a guy like santana who goes once every 5 days.

they would get more for him now than they would next year. he wouldn't just be a 2 month-rental this year.

Hill, Pie, Cedeno, Patterson, Gallagher, Fox, Pawelek, Dopirak, Harvey shold do it.

Do you really need a signature picture that nearly takes up the entire screen?

The Twins should trade Nathan and use his money to resign Santana, then make Neshek their closer.

Santana is making 12M, Nathan is making 5M. 12+5<<<<< Santanas salaring in the FA market.

The Dodgers are the team that makes sense because of their endless stream of high quality, high ceiling young prospects at all positions.

I bet you could get the Twins interested in moving Santana if LA offered, for example, Kemp, Abreu and Lu.

Santana via trade... mmm. I wonder if that would drive Z's asking price into the realm of reasonableness, in that he wouldn't be the only rooster in the henhouse?
