Piniella said after that game that managing pitch counts is more important than letting starters finish off games.

"What we're thinking about is keeping him nice and strong," Piniella said. "The weather is going to turn a little warmer in August, and we want to keep these guys fresh. At the same time, we recognize we're not six or seven deep, starting rotation-wise, so let's keep these kids as strong as possible."

Piniella said he didn't need to convince Lilly it was best for him to come out.

"All I need to do is get somebody else in the game," he said. "I do talk to these guys, believe me, and I try to make them understand it."

Piniella pointed out Lilly ran the bases hard, and he also wanted to get Michael Wuertz and Scott Eyre some work.

"It's a dual function—you like to keep your bullpen nice and sharp too, if you can," he said. "Once you tire a pitcher's arm out, you don't get it back right away. It takes a while."

pretty sad that we're all still really happy to read stuff like this. Just goes to show how inept Dusty was.

Seconded.

Anyone remember when Dusty admitted he didn't know the starter's pitch count after a ballgame? It was either Prior or Z that threw 120 or something like that.

Reading this makes me smile - Lou isn't perfect, but at least he's more or less avoiding the worst managerial error he could make. Namely, destroying a pitcher's arm.

Pinielle recently said he loses the ticker when Z is pitching.

It's nice that he's paying attention to this stuff. But that is his job.
