I'd stay away. His ERA (4.77), ERA+ (95) and WHIP (1.62) are all quite unimpressive. He's also given up 20 HR's, which is the 3rd most allowed in the NL. Plus, like you said, I really don't think we need a SP right now.

I think we could use one, but unless its a real upgrade and some with at minimum #3 quality then no.

I just don't think anyone is really available.

shnsajax is on point, the Cubs could use a SP with at least #3 stuff especially to get deep in the playoffs. The Cubs don't need another SP to make the playoffs, possibly a callup of Murton or another OF bat could be what the Cubs need to play in October.

Livan is not the answer. It would be a lot like the Kendall acquisiton, a very slight upgrade of what the Cubs already have, not improving enough on the Cubs' immediate needs.

I look at a seven game playoff series and wonder who the Cubs would pitch in the third game. I like Hill a lot but neither he, Marquis, nor Marshall has stepped up to fill that role, in my opinion.

I would love the Cubs to pick up a SP and go for a World Series run and one guy that comes to mind is, and I hate to say it.....possibly Jon Garland? A little (and possibly stupid) rumor I heard on Sporting News Radio.

Garland would be great, but if Williams is seeking a king's ransom for players like Contreras and Dye, can you imagine what he'd want for Garland? Probably Hill, Pie, and Veal for starters.

I'm not sure why the Cubs would want Garland. If you put his numbers so far this season on the Cubs, he'd be the 6th best starter for the Cubs. He's been a mid 4's ERA guy for most of his career besides 1 year. He is certainly no better than Lilly or Hill. He probably is a little better than Marquis, but that's not nearly worth what it would take in talent and salary to acquire him.

I really dont see why people are clamoring for another SP. I keep hearing people say they dont trust Marshall...that same Marshall has given up or fewer earned runs in 9 of his 11 starts. The only pitcher I would even think about moving from the rotation is Marquis, but we all know thats not happening anytime soon with that contract. Plus, the majority of the pitchers available are not very good. Livan Hernandez? No Kyle Lohse? Hell NO Jose Contreras? HELL NO Am I missing some quality starter that is better than what we aleady have?

I'm not making an argument for or against Garland, just pointing out that a "mid 4's ERA" in the AL translates into a pretty good pitcher in the NL without the DH.

Renteria for Garland is the rumor... not sure that's something Hendry can match.

but it shows that KW is not looking for top prospects. still not sure we have a ML starter quality player we'd be willing to give up....unless he really wants Jock
