When I wrote the Top 10 Catchers list, Cubs prospect Geovany Soto was in the majors. When it was published, he was back at Triple-A — which has caused somewhat of a stir in my email inbox asking me why I have such low regards for Soto. I actually like Soto quite a bit, and would now rank him third on the list. Why he’s in Triple-A while the team gave away an marginal backup catcher and a nice sleeper in Jeremy Blevins for the charred remains of Jason Kendall is beyond me.

Not including '07 draftees:

1. Jeff Clement, Mariners

2. Bryan Anderson, Cardinals

[3. Soto - see above]

3. J.R. Towles, Astros

4. Taylor Teagarden, Rangers

5. Hank Conger, Angels

6. John Jaso, Devil Rays

7. Max Ramirez, Indians

8. Nick Hundley, Padres

9. Tony Recker, Athletics

10. Jesus Montero, Yankees

Jim Hendry...that is why.

Soto's o.k., but he's no Jason Kendall..... Geovany's 2 starts w/ the big club clearly showed he doesn't have the chops to play at this level.

i like Soto, but if he's the third-best catcher in the minors, then there really aren't many good catching prospects.

I forgot to mention that. Goldstein did mourn the thin crop of MiLB catchers.

I generally assume everyone is being sarcastic if I disagree with what they write. :pl:

This is why Saltalamacchia is such a valuable trading chip for Atlanta. Not only is catching weak at the MLB level in the first place, but it is near-historically weak in the minors, as well. If/when Wieters signs, he immediately becomes the top catching prospect in MiLB.

Note--so far, Donaldson is looking like an inspired pick, though. Nice, but he's at least 2-3 years away from helping, and that assumes he can progress.

I'm not so sure with Jeff Clement still in AAA.

clement is overrated... wieters will be the best of any catcher currently not on a major league roster, whenever he signs

Who is Jeremy Blevins? Maybe Mr. Goldstein meant Jerry Blevins? Or Jeremy Piven?
