Boise loads the bases up in the 8th with 2 hits and a walk so there won't be a perfect game or no-hitter. They didn't score any runs so they're still being shut out.

Iowa Wins Fourth in a Row

By Toby Hyde / http://www.iowacubs.com

The Iowa Cubs slugged four home runs to beat the New Orleans Zephyrs in a back and forth 9-7 win at Principal Park on Sunday. The Cubs head into the three day All-Star break winners of four games in a row.

Tony Richie and John Nelson each homered twice and drove home three runs. The two homered one batter apart in the second inning, which at the time, gave Iowa a 3-1 lead.

In the seventh inning, John Nelson broke a 7-7 tie with a mammoth two run shot to leftfield. The Zephyrs had scored two runs in the top half of the inning to tie the game.

In the sixth inning, in a 5-5 game, Tony Richie lifted a two-run home run to left to put Iowa ahead 7-5.

Iowa starter Les Walrond strained his left hamstring sliding into second running the bases in the second inning prompting manager Buddy Bailey to use a season-high seven pitchers.

Cedar Rapids, IA – Juan Mateo turned in his best rehab start and Casey Lambert picked up his first professional save as the Peoria Chiefs moved into sole possession of first place with a 3-2 Sunday afternoon win over the Cedar Rapids Kernels. Peoria is four games over .500 in a half for the first time since May 15th at 11-7 and are one game up on the Beloit Snappers in the Western Division.

For the second game in a row the Chiefs scored in the first inning at Cedar Rapids . With one out, Ryne Malone singled off the glove of second baseman Wil Ortiz. After a flyout, the Chiefs executed a perfect hit-and-run as Derek Schermerhorn singled to right and Malone moved to third. Blake Lalli picked up his 5th RBI of the roadtrip with a single to right as Malone scored for a 1-0 Chiefs lead. With runners on the corners, Kernels starter Amalio Diaz induced a groundout from Jim Adduci to end the frame.

Cedar Rapids came right back against Mateo in the home half of the first. A four-pitch, one-out walk to Abel Nieves set the stage for a Matt Sweeney RBI double to left to tie the game 1-1. Mateo buckled down and struck out Mark Trumbo before Julio Perez bounced out to end the inning.

Jonathon Mota led off the Chiefs third with a bloop single to center and then stole second to get into scoring position. With two outs, Schermerhorn came through with a RBI single to left as Mota scored for a 2-1 Chiefs lead.

Peoria added to the lead in the fifth against Diaz. Matt Camp led off with a walk and Malone singled with one out. When the duo pulled off a double steal, Camp came home as catcher Scott Knazek threw wildly to second on the play.

Cedar Rapids rallied in the seventh against reliever Jayson Ruhlman. With one out, Anderson Rosario homered just over the wall in straight away center field. With two down, Nieves singled, Sweeney walked and Trumbo singled to loaded the bases. Newcomer Casey Lambert relieved Ruhlman with the tying run at third and got Perez to bounce into a fielders’ choice at third, ending the threat.

Mateo, in what is likely his last Chiefs rehab start, threw a season high six innings on 82 pitches. He allowed one run on just three hits with a season high six strikeouts and two walks. Ruhlman allowed one run on three hits and a walk in 2/3 of an inning. Lambert allowed one basehit and struck out four in 2 1/3 scoreless innings to pick up his first save.

Gorman’s Pub Co-Players of the Game: Juan Mateo (SP) & Casey Lambert (RP) – Mateo turned in his best rehab start in a Chiefs uniform with six strikeouts and just one run over six innings. The former Cub allowed three hits and walked two while winning his second straight start. Lambert entered with the bases loaded in the 7th and didn’t allow a run. He struck out the last four batters he faced for his first professional save and threw 23 strikes on 25 pitches.

PASCO, WA -- Tri City starter Bruce Billings threw five perfect innings Sunday night as the Tri City Dust Devils beat the Boise Hawks, 4-1. Billings retired the first 15 Hawks batters of the game before leaving after five innings. He won his first game of the year. Cory Riordan finished up for Tri City allowing a run in the ninth and picked up the save.

Tri City only needed five hits, including a home run by Darin Holcomb, to post the victory. Julio Castillo lasted only two innings in his second start for the Hawks, allowing two runs. Audi Santana gave up two runs in two innings. John Muller and Chris Siegfried each threw two shutout innings to close out the game.

Des Moines Register[/url]"]The bad news? Pitcher Les Walrond, who has been a staple of consistency as a starter, pulled his left hamstring in the second inning attempting to slide into second base and left the game. Walrond was trying for his ninth win, which would equal the Pacific Coast League lead, and the Cubs were hoping for a second consecutive quality pitching start.

"He's been consistently giving us six or seven innings," Cubs manager Buddy Bailey said. "If he has to miss some time, we're definitely going to feel that. We're going to have to pull a guy out of the bullpen into the rotation. Hopefully it isn't that bad. Luckily the break is here because that will give him three days to let it calm down."

I'd guess Cory Bailey will be the guy to get a crack at starting though it'd be nice if the Cubs call up Mark Holliman or have Billy Petrick start.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Holliman called up after the break to get a chance at starting in AAA.

Great news!!

Yes, a healthy and effective Mateo could give us the pitching depth to make a deal if needed.
