SmokiesBaseball.com"]Smokies take series from Stars with 2-1 win

Sevierville, TN – The Tennessee Smokies took the rubber match of the six-game series against the Huntsville Stars on Saturday night with a hard fought 2-1 win in front of 5,191 excited fans. Paul Schappert pitched his best outing of the season, going five solid innings yielding only one run on four hits. The Smokies bullpen shined once again to preserve the victory for Schappert.

Huntsville got on the board early against Schappert (3-2) in the first inning. Steve Moss opened the game with a single for the Stars, and eventually moved to 2nd on a Steve Sollman groundout. Moss came home on an Adam Heether single, but Jorge Cortes gunned down Sollman at third base to end the inning and avoid further damage. With the run scoring in the play, Huntsville had an early 1-0 lead.

The Smokies struck back with a run of their own in the bottom half of the first inning. Tennessee jumped on Stars pitcher Sam Narron (3-6) with two consecutive singles by leadoff hitter Sam Fuld followed by Issmael Salas. Fuld crossed the plate to tie the game after a Jake Fox groundout was followed by a throwing error, and suddenly the game was tied at one.

Tennessee scored their second and last run of the game for both teams in the bottom of the 4th inning. With two out and Cortes on first base, Schappert reached on an error to put runners at 1st and 2nd. Sam Fuld then delivered with a single down the left field line to score Cortes and put the Smokies up 2-1.

The score would remain that way for the rest of the contest, as the Smokies bullpen once again came through with a spectacular outing. After Schappert exited after five strong innings, the combination of Billy Petrick, Jerry Blevins, and Jim Henderson teamed up to throw three scoreless innings. Henderson pitched the ninth inning to pick up his fourth save.

Tennessee will take to the road and travel to North Carolina for a six game series against division rival Carolina Mudcats. The Smokies will return home to Smokies Park for a four game series against the Mississippi Braves on Saturday June 30th through Tuesday July 3rd.

PeoriaChiefs.com"]Chiefs Tie Game in 9th, Lose 3-2

Beloit, WI –The Peoria Chiefs rallied against the Beloit Snappers and the best closer in the MWL to tie the game in the top of the ninth but a dropped third strike led to a 3-2 walk-off loss Saturday night. The loss drops the Chiefs to 1-2 on the second half and 32-40 on the season.

Trailing 2-1 with two outs in the ninth, the Chiefs rallied against All-Star closer Rob Delaney who entered the game a perfect 23-for-23 in save chances. Matt Camp drew a walk on a 3-2 pitch and promptly stole second and third. Jonathon Mota delivered a clutch two-strike single to right to tie game 2-2 and saddling Delaney with his first blown save of the season. Mota stole second but Delaney struck out Brian Leclerc to end the frame.

Matt Maradeo, who gave up a run in the eighth, started the ninth with a strikeout. He then struck out Garrett Olson swinging, but the pitch went to the backstop and Olson reached first safely. Alex Maestri relieved Maradeo and Yancarlos Ortiz connected on a hit-and-run single moving Olson to third. The Chiefs elected to intentionally walk Steven Singleton to set up a force at home. Matt Betsill won the game with a line drive single to center for a 3-2 final.

The Chiefs offense had its hands full facing All-Star starter and MWL ERA leader Jeff Manship who shut the Chiefs out 1-0 May 16th. Peoria wasted little time though in taking a lead. Mota led off with a double and moved to third on a groundout. Josh Lansford chopped a RBI infield single to third for an early 1-0 lead. Russ Canzler followed with a single to left but Manship retired Jim Adduci and Blake Lalli to end the frame.

Mateo allowed just one baserunner in two innings before running into trouble in the third. With one out, Yancarlos Ortiz singled to left and moved to third when newcomer Leclerc overthrew second base. Mateo got a pop-up for the second out, but Matt Betsill tied the game 1-1 with a double down the rightfield line.

The Chiefs chased Manship in the sixth inning but failed to score in the frame. With one out, Canzler singled to right and Manship issued just his ninth walk of the season to Adduci. With two lefties due up, Beloit brought in left-handed reliever Jose Lugo. Lugo induced a fielders choice grounder off the bat of Lalli before Ryne Malone flew out to left keeping the game tied 1-1.

The Chiefs threatened again in the seventh against reliever Matt Fox but came up empty. Matt Canepa drew a lead off walk and Matt Camp singled to left. Mota executed a perfect sac bunt to move the runners to second and third with one out. Fox struck out Leclerc for the second out and Lansford grounded out to second to end the inning.

Matt Maradeo came out of the Chiefs bullpen for the eighth inning in the 1-1 game. He issued a leadoff walk to Betseill before Eli Tintor bunted into a fielders’ choice. Chris Parmelee gave the Snappers their first and only lead of the game with a double to leftcenter as Tintor scored all the way from first. Maradeo got out of the eighth with back to back outs but without the lead.

Mateo turned in his best start of the season allowing just one run on three hits over three innings. The former Cub struck out three and did not allow a walk. Miguel Cuevas came out of the bullpen and tossed four shutout innings in which he allowed two hits and three walks while striking out two. Maradeo took the loss allowing one run one hit and a walk while striking out three in 1 1/3 innings.

Gorman’s Pub Player of the Game: Jonathon Mota (SS) – Mota doubled and scored in the first before tying the game with a RBI single in the ninth. He also stole a base and laid down a sacrifice bunt.

He'll be back later this year though. Same with Cedeno I bet.

The headline of the Daytona article is one of my pet peeves-

The Cubs loose 5 straight?

How are you a newspaper writer (or a headline writer) and you don't know how to write the word lose? I see lose spelled as loose on the Internet all the time as well. Normally, spelling mistakes don't bother me, but it's such a short, easy word.

Posted
I agree. People shouldn't loose sight of things like that and allow their spelling to become lose. You could loose the track of what people are saying.
Posted
I frequently see college students use loose instead of lose on some of the writing assignments I give. I always point it out, along with it's vs. its, affect vs. effect, and manager vs. manger.
