Goldstein's mock (with Vitters going 2)
While the Cubs would love to take Wieters, he's yet another Boras client. The Cubs have no problem with Boras, nor with his expected bonus demands, but Major League Baseball does. With the Cubs ownership situation in limbo, the Cubs have been instructed by MLB to adhere strictly to the slot system, with no well-over slot bonuses, and certainly no big league deal -- and Wieters will require both. Rumors that the Cubs would go the super-cheap option with Virginia first baseman Sean Doolittle are more than a little silly, but they've been bearing down hard on Indiana high school righty Jarrod Parker of late, with GM Jim Hendry and special assistant Gary Hughes in attendance at multiple Parker outings in May.

So it's MLB that is telling the Cubs what they can do? That's an interesting development.

No excuse for not going over slot if the talent is worthy if the request is not coming from ownership.

Thats how I feel as well.

The notion that MLB would instruct (more like ask, pretty please) the Cubs to adhere strictly to the slot system is totally understandable.

The notion that MLB's directive or whatever would have anything to do with the Cubs' ownership situation is totally silly (especially the part about no big league deal).

That's what I found confusing-those two things shouldn't go together.

I would flip the middle finger to MLB in record time.

Seriously, don't draft the player you want because he wants a lot of money? F off.

they do this because the MLBPA won't come after them for trying to hold down the bonuses of amateur players. Meanwhile draft bonuses are probably about 5% of an average team's annual expenditures, but are a far more important part of a team's future. If MLB tried to do this with free agency, they'd be brought up on collusion charges so fast they wouldn't know what hit them.

MLB doesn't have the authority to insist on that, since there's no clause in the CBA. All they can do is recommend; they have no power to enforce slot money.

over/under on how soon parker needs arm surgery after we draft him? i'm going with two years.

I dont think so. He has very good mechanics, and a very smooth, free and easy release. He is a very low risk to have an injury.

Great mechanics means 27 minutes after signing his contract with the Cubs, the concrete stairs he is walking down crack causing him to fall on top of Felix Pie breaking Pie's leg while Parker dislocates his throwing shoulder.
