Olney basically put a lot of the problems of today on the lap of Lou Piniella because there is not a good clucbhouse environment because Lou blames players in post game press conferences. He said that even players from other teams have told him that the players on the Cubs are not happy.

I just cannot even begin to tell how irritating this is to me--I can understand a lot of things, but how any player on the Cubs could this year feel like they have not deserved every single piece of critism they have gotten is just beyond me. I was thinking about how soft the players of today have become and it just makes me sick. Even the other day, AROD gives a little scream running by a guy catching a pop-up and it is like he is public enemy number one--I mean here is an idea--instead of b*&^&ing about it, do something. Next time he comes up drill his butt or even better, just be a man and catch the stupid pop-up, but quit being a little sisssy and whining about him yelling as he ran by.---IT IS A JOKE

I just really feel like everyone in the big leagues has gotten way too soft--even with todays events--really, who fricken cares--people fight, they have been doing it for years, they should be frustrated and pissed off, but now let it go and move forward like me.

Sorry for the rant, but I am just tired of listening to this crap all the time.--TOUGHEN UP!!

Who were the people raving about Lou holding players accountable? Nice one, guys.

There's a big difference between holding a guy accountable and throwing them under the bus in press conferences.

I dont understand what you are saying RichHill????

You think Lou is too tough on them? Have you seen the way they have played the games. We can all sit and talk for hours on the net about manager, but players win/loss most games. And pretty much all of them have sucked this year so the fact that anyone, and I mean ANYONE from the cubs team would complain about being called out by Lou whether it be that he is holding them accountable or throwing them under the bus, I DONT CARE. You shoudl be held accountable and you should be thrown under the bus. You are being paid a great deal of money to play this game, now quitting whing about your manager saying you are sucking and grow and a pair and go play better!!!!

AAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH-my frustration has hit a new limit!

Ahh, the poor Cubs players. Dusty was so nice and wonderful to them and let them do whatever they wanted. Now mean old Uncle Lou is telling them they can't just do whatever they want and making them do work and take responsibility for their actions.

Someone call the Whaaaaambulance.

Lou hasn't said anything in the media that I haven't to the tv, but he's their manager, not a fan. He owes them a certain amount of respect in the public arena. Rip them a new one in private. Make them ride the bench. You don't accomplish anything positive by tossing guys under the bus in press conferences. Quite the opposite.

I completely agree with you on this one. It is one thing to hold a player accountable for his play and another thing to throw him under the bus in front of the media. And people are wondering why Barrett is having issues this season. ::sheesh::

Ummm............. because they've shown so much respect out on the field?!?!

I have no issue at all. It's not throwing them under the bus, it's honesty at the core. He normally makes "general" criticisms anyway. This really isn't an issue, IMHO.

If they don't perform out on the field, they deserve to get ripped so everyone can hear them. They're big guys. They should be able to handle it if they make mistakes like getting picked off at 2nd, running to 3rd on a grounder hit to the left side, having a passed ball and a throwing error on the same play, etc. Make the plays and do the right thing. You won't get called out then.

This was said by Don Zimmer; maybe it's relevant, maybe not, but it sums up my feelings towards this team:

When I came up, I was the third option at 3B. When I finally got my chance to play, I always kept in mind that I was one bad performance from going back down to the minors.

And by someone else whom I respect:

Very few players on this Cubs team play the game with that mindset.

The attitude of entitlement permeates all of baseball, but when you watch a team like the Marlins, with only a couple of guys that you've ever heard of kick your ass so hard you could be wearing it for a hat, you have to give some credence to what Zimmer said.

I have immense respect for Piniella; maybe it's because he's an old guy like me. He has shown immense patience. If it had been me, I would have exploded long before Friday.

I have really enjoyed the chatter at this forum. I have learned more about sabermetrics than I thought possible. Yet I still believe that a team has a major emotional component; the problem is you can't measure it like you can RISP. So I have no objective basis for saying this, but I think the heart of the Cubs had a major coronary yesterday. So sad.

That's all I have. I am building a small bonfire this evening. Anyone want to join?

If Lou Piniella were calling out just one player in front of the media, then yes, he shouldn't be throwing that player under the bus. But he's taking issues with the team as a whole, which is perfectly fine with me.

I have never really heard him rip on an individual either. What is amazing to me is that you cannot win as a coach/manager. If you rip (Piniella), then you are hurting their feelings, but if you dont (baker), then you are too soft. Again, i go back to--it is the players who have to get the job done, period!!

The team is well under .500, they've been blown out by teams just as bad, they've lost several 1-run games late. They know they are playing like crap. I don't have much of a problem with Lou calling out the team as a whole, but he has called out individuals at times (Barrett, Dempster, Murton). And I wouldn't have a problem with that if he was pulling all the right strings. Not just that, but he is also threatening to do something about the team and certain players, but doing nothing. When you are not putting your team in the best position to win, you are a problem too, Lou.

I don't have any problem with Lou ripping this team as a whole. They stink and deserve to be told that they do.

Calling out individuals is probably not a good idea in this or any case, but I don't blame him for being frustrated.
