I love how Tennessee has Holliman-Veal-Gallagher (in a row) who are red hot...and then they hit you with Berg and Hart who are struggling mightily.

Mike Fontenot was named the PCL player of the week:

Pacific Coast League

Mike Fontenot, Iowa

.581 (18-31), 12 R, 5 2B, 3 3B, 2 HR, 13 RBI, 1 BB, 7 SO, 0 SB, 1.129 SLG

It's hard to get much hotter than Fontenot has been lately, as the 5-foot-8 infielder has hit safely and scored in each of his past nine games, and driven in a run in his past seven. The 26-year-old collected four hits on both Tuesday and Sunday, and went 3-for-4 with a home run, two triples and five RBIs against Fresno on Wednesday. Fontenot is hitting .368 on the season, good for third in the PCL.

PCL Notebook"]Iowa Cubs (Chicago Cubs)

THE WEEK THAT WAS: The Cubs enjoyed a 6-1 week and held the top spot in the American North Division.

WHO'S HOT/NOT: SS Mike Fontenot had 12 hits in his last 21 at-bats (.571), collecting two home runs and 10 RBIs in a five-game span. ... 2B Eric Patterson batted .462 (18-for-39) with seven RBIs and nine runs scored over his last 10 games. ... 1B Micah Hoffpauir had a .160 average (4-for-25) over his last nine games, though he had two home runs and six RBIs in that stretch.

RED-HOT IN MAY: The Cubs started May slowly, losing two of three games to Nashville -- including one by a score of 14-4 and the other, 2-0, in the nightcap of a doubleheader -- to drop to a season-low three games under .500. But with the help of an energized offense, the Cubs caught fire, winning eight consecutive games before finally losing Saturday to Sacramento. Beginning May 4, they swept four-game series at New Orleans and at home against Fresno, scoring an average of 6.9 runs per game in the process.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK: "He's All-World right now. He's not a speedster, but he's not a turtle, either." -Manager Buddy Bailey, to the Des Moines Register, on Fontenot's hot hitting.

SL Notebook"]Tennessee Smokies (Chicago Cubs)

THE WEEK THAT WAS: The Smokies (18-16) held first place in the North Division with a 4-3 week.

WHO'S HOT, WHO'S NOT: OF Sam Fuld raised his average to .348 with a 9-for-20 week. ... 3B Casey McGehee was just 4-for-22 since being sent down from Triple-A Iowa, but did have a homer.

PLAYER TO WATCH: RHP Mark Holliman improved to 5-0 and lowered his ERA to 0.44 with eight scoreless innings in a 9-0 victory at Montgomery. He scattered seven hits, walked two and struck out seven. "All he does is throw all of his pitches for strikes and stay ahead in the count," Smokies manager Pat Listach told the Montgomery Advertiser. "That's pitching."

PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK: OF Jorge Cortes raised his MiLB-leading average to .415 with a 12-for-21 week that included a 5-for-5 game against Montgomery. The 26-year-old from Venezuela also had a homer and four RBIs during the week. With 13 walks compared to 10 strikeouts on the season, he had a .495 on-base percentage to go with a .524 slugging average.

FSL Notebook"]Daytona Cubs (Chicago Cubs)

THE WEEK THAT WAS: The Cubs won five of six games with one postponement at Tampa on May 8 due to extreme smoke from numerous wildfires burning throughout the state, the same sources of fire that forced Clearwater to postpone a game as well. Despite the good week for Daytona, the Cubs finished a half-game game out of first in the FSL East, trailing first-place Brevard County.

WHO'S HOT, WHO'S NOT: RP Jerry Blevins continues to mow down opponents. In 14 games and 22 2/3 innings Blevins has racked up 30 strikeouts against just five walks and one earned run for an ERA of 0.40. ... 1B Ryan Norwood can't seem to get out of his slump. Norwood has just seven hits in 36 at-bats, a .194 rut.

PLAYER TO WATCH: While Blevins is racking up some impressive numbers, his teammate in the bullpen, Matthew Avery, isn't pitching too badly either. Avery is tied for the team lead in saves with Blevins (six). While Avery doesn't have gaudy strikeout numbers like Blevins, he has a 1.96 ERA through 18 1/3 innings.

PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK: Although winning five of six games, the Cubs didn't have a player that really stood out. But in a 9-4 win over Lakeland on May 10, 3B Matt Matulia had three hits in five at-bats and scored two runs. The Citadel graduate raised his average to .293.

SL Notebook"]Peoria Chiefs (Chicago Cubs)

SO FAR THIS SEASON: The Chiefs are 18-15 and in fourth place in the Western Division.

WHO'S HOT: OF Alfred Joseph leads the team with a .288 (32-for-111) average with five doubles, a triple, a home run and 12 RBIs.

STEAKS HALTED: IF Jonathan Mota saw his eight-game hit streak come to an end Wednesday in a 10-7 loss at Dayton. ... OF Yusef Carter's season-high nine-game hit streak ended Friday in a 10-9 win at Dayton.

DID YOU KNOW: Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg earned his first managerial ejection in Monday's 10-4 loss to Fort Wayne for arguing with an umpire. Incidentally, Sandberg was ejected twice in his 15-year playing career. ...The day before, SS Dylan Johnston became the first Chiefs player to be ejected this season for arguing balls and strikes in a 6-4 loss at Fort Wayne.

ROSTER MOVE: RHP Rafael Dolis (3-1, 1.80 ERA) was placed on the disabled list with elbow soreness last week. In his place, RHP Mike Billek was called up from extended Spring Training.

SAY WHAT?: Despite committing six errors Friday against host Dayton, the Chiefs still managed to pull out a 10-9 victory. Johnston committed four of the errors, but did his best to make up for the miscues with a ninth-inning, go-ahead three-run home run.

Made it to my first Jaxx game of the year and had a blast. I took a couple of friends and got front row seats at 3rd since Longoria was playing. Figured I'd have some fun and cheer for him and he went yard. We stood up and cheered for him as he rounded the bases. When he came out to take the field, he walked over and tipped his cap.

IowaCubs.com"]River Cats Claw Cubs with Four Home Runs in 12-2 win

By Jeff Lantz / http://www.iowacubs.com

The Sacramento River Cats hit four home runs en route to a 11-2 win over the Iowa Cubs Monday night at Principal Park.

J.J. Furmaniak hit the first pitch of the game over the centerfield wall to set the tone against Iowa starter Ryan O'Malley, who was tagged with the loss and fell to 1-3 on the year.

Furmaniak added another home run, a two-run shot, in the fifth inning while Kurt Suzuki and Hiram Bocachica added longballs for the River Cats.

Felix Pie homered in the first inning for Iowa and Mike Fontenot extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a fifth inning single. Eric Patterson extended his hitting streak to eight games with a seventh inning single.

SmokiesBaseball.com"]Smokies fall to Lookouts 7-1

Sevierville, TN – Smokies starting pitcher Mark Holliman came into tonight’s game as the league leader in ERA and wins. That will still be the case, but Holliman was unable to notch his sixth win of the season as the Tennessee Smokies fell to the Chattanooga Lookouts by a score of 7-1 tonight in front of 2,988. The Smokies dropped to 18-18 on the season, while Chattanooga improved to 18-20.

Chattanooga drew first blood in the first inning off of Smokies starter Mark Holliman (5-1). Cody Strait led off the game with a double, and then scored on a triple by Paul Janish to make the score 1-0 Lookouts. After Holliman worked out of the inning, Jake Fox crushed his fifth home run of the season in the first inning to even the score at 1-1.

Holliman’s struggles continued in the third inning, as Strait hit a towering home run to give the Lookout’s a 2-1 lead. Later in the inning, Yanish was driven home on a sacrifice fly by Jay Garthwaite to stake Chattanooga to a 3-1 lead. But Holliman, the Southern League leader in wins, was able to escape the inning without any further damage.

Chattanooga added two more runs in the fourth, and another two runs in the eighth to put the game out of reach for the Smokies. Lookouts starting pitcher Camilo Vazquez (3-3) got the win, pitching five strong innings. Calvin Medlock and Carlos Guevara pitched four innings of scoreless relief, as the Smokies were held to three hits in the game.

DaytonaCubs.com"]Cubs Blow Five-Run Lead

Vero Beach Improves at Home

By: Matt Martinez

It was a cloudy and humid night in Vero Beach as the Cubs sent Joel Santo to the bump to face off against Paul Moviel and a Devil Ray team that had won seven of their last ten. Game one of the three-game series would prove to be an arduous one as Daytona (20-16) blew a five-run lead in Vero Beach as the Devil Rays (18-18) trounced the Cubs, 12-7.

Chris Amador led the game off with a triple and came home to score on a Tyler Colvin single one batter later. Jesus Valdez tapped an infield single and with two down and two out, Robinson Chirinos laced a two-bagger to bring in Colvin and Valdez. Ryan Norwood got into the action with an RBI single of his own as the Cubs took a 4-0 lead before the Devil Rays even had a chance to swing the bat.

A scoreless bottom half of the first led to a sacrifice fly by Colvin in the top half of the second to extend the lead, 5-0. But even with a five-run cushion, Cub's starter Joel Santo would falter.

In five innings of work, Santo allowed eight runs on twelve base hits which included four solo home runs. Santo would leave the game in the bottom of the sixth with the bases loaded and nobody out for Cub's reliever John Mueller. Mueller surrendered a base hit to Hunter Vick which moved the runs nintey feet and advanced the D-Rays into a 6-5 lead. An infield flyout and a sac fly RBI left first base empty, as Mueller allotted a walk to Pat Cottrell and re-loaded the bases. Rhyne Hughes promptly knocked a four-run round tripper to blow the game wide open, 11-5.

The Cubs would add two runs as the Devil Rays added one more to make the score 12-7.

At least Pie is continuing to shine. Hopefully we can trade JJ and get him up here for good.

Id really like to see him playing CF in Chicago every day. We really need to move JJ, seems like someone would be interested in him *sigh*

Knoxville News Sentinel"]"I was trying to do a little too much and kind got out of my rhythm and out of my game," said the former Ole Miss Rebel, who walked three. "I left some pitches up."

...

Holliman had no indication he would struggle as he warmed up.

"Actually, my bullpen was real good," he said. "I felt good and I was locating real well. I just didn't take it out to the game."

Holliman said there are lessons to be learned from losing; that's part of the minor league experience.

"Every night you go out there, whether you do good or you don't do good, is a learning experience," he said. "I'll look back and analyze what I did wrong and what I need to do better next week."

Additional quote:

The Smokies' .273 average leads the league. Jorge Cortes (.407), Josh Kroeger (.363), and Fox (.315) were 1-4-10 in the race for the batting title through Sunday's games.

Additionally, I believe Matt Craig (.346) would have been 5th except for being a few PA's short because of his stint on the DL. Cortes, Kroeger and Craig all have OPS over .900, and after Tuesdays 4-4 with a HR Fox is probably over .900, too.

Cortes actually lead all of the minor leagues in BA until yesterday.
