Marmol has a nice 9K/0BB tonight through 7IP.

Pagan with a HR and EPatt a sac fly, tied at 2 through 7.

Iowa ended up winning 3-2 on an RBI single in the 8th by Tony Richie.

Like Brian said, Marmol was real good tonight. He did give up two solo homers, but I love that 9 K/0 BB part of the line.

Billy Petrick!!!!

And yay Marmol.

Posted
7 IP, 0 BB, 9 K and only 87 pitches for Carlos Marmol. The 2 HRs aren't good, but they don't hurt all that much when no one else is getting on base.

DaytonaCubs.com"]Taylor, Garcia Lead Cubs Past Yankees

Unheralded Heroes Combine for 4-1 Win

By: Dan Watson

[TAMPA, FL] Given their rough starts to the 2007 season, Scott Taylor and Alberto Garcia didn’t seem to be likely candidates to lead the Daytona Cubs to victory. But Taylor turned in a sparkling performance on the mound while Garcia continued a phenomenal week at the plate, and the Cubs controlled the Tampa Yankees, 4-1 Sunday at Legends Field.

Taylor entered Sunday winless in five starts, but delivered a tremendous outing to earn his first win of the year. The right-hander fired six shutout innings, holding Tampa to just four hits. Taylor (1-3) struck out six and didn’t walk a batter.

Meanwhile, Alberto Garcia’s explosion onto the Florida State League scene continued. Garcia went 2-for-4 with a triple and a solo home run for his fourth consecutive multi-hit game. The first baseman, who started the season with a 3-for-25 slump, is now on an 11-for-15 tear.

It was a pitcher’s duel early on, as Tampa starter Eric Hacker matched Taylor pitch for pitch through four innings. In the top of the fifth, Garcia started kick-started the offense by hitting a liner into the gap in left-center. Garcia sped into third with a triple, and an errant throw to third went into the dugout, allowing Garcia to score. Nate Spears followed with a single, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jake Muyco, and scored on an RBI single by Matt Matulia.

Daytona would add onto their 2-0 lead on a bizarre chain of events in the eighth inning. With two out, Ryan Harvey swung and missed at a 1-2 pitch. The ball got away from the catcher, and Harvey reached on the wild pitch. Tampa reliever Jose Valdez uncorked two more wild pitches with Robinson Chirinos at the plate, allowing Harvey to move all the way to third. In the same at-bat, another ball got away from the Yankee catcher and Harvey dashed home on the passed ball to give the Cubs a 3-0 lead.

Tampa finally got on the board in the bottom of the eighth. Daytona reliever Mike Phelps hit Francisco Cervelli with a pitch, and Kevin Russo followed with a base hit to put runners at first and second with one out. Southpaw Jerry Blevins came out of the bullpen and allowed a single to Reggie Corona to load the bases. Tim Battle followed with an RBI sac fly to plate Cervelli and cut the Daytona advantage to 3-1. Blevins then induced a groundout to end the inning.

The Cubs struck again in the top of the ninth when Garcia slammed his first home run of the year over the wall in left-center. The solo shot put Daytona up, 4-1. Blevins finished off the Yankees with a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth to nail down his fifth save of the season.

Daytona handed Hacker (1-1) his first loss of the season. With the win, the Cubs improved to 16-14 on the season as Tampa dropped to 14-16.

PeoriaChiefs.com"]Chiefs Lose 3rd Straight

Fort Wayne, IN – Two unearned first inning runs and a sixth inning homer carried the Fort Wayne Wizards to a 6-4 win over the Peoria Chiefs Sunday afternoon at Memorial Stadium.

Peoria left two runners on base in the first inning and Fort Wayne immediately capitalized in the home half of the inning. Billy Muldowney, making his return from the DL gave up back to back leadoff hits and Javis Diaz scored on a fielders choice. Muldowney should have been out of the inning after that, but second baseman Jonathon Mota kicked a grounder and then Alfred Joseph misplayed the ball in rightfield leading to two unearned Wizards runs.

Peoria got on the board in the third when Yusuf Carter tripled and came home on a groundout from Dylan Johnston. The Chiefs had numerous chances against Fort Wayne starter Nathan Culp but left runners in scoring position in the second, fourth and sixth innings.

Fort Wayne opened the game up late against the Peoria bullpen. In the sixth, usual starter Jose Pina allowed his MWL leading fifth home run of the season. Jeremy Hunt’s two-run blast gave Fort Wayne a 5-1 lead.

The Chiefs trailed 6-1 in the eighth when thy rallied against the Wizards bullpen. With one out and a runner on second, Josh Lansford singled home a run. Lansford moved to second on a walk to DJ Lewis and Matt Canepa made it 6-3 with his first RBI of the season. Mota walked to load the bases but Carter lined out hard to right to end the inning.

Peoria added an unearned run in the ninth off closer RJ Rodriguez but Lewis grounded out as the tying run to end the game. Muldowney (2-2) took the loss despite giving up just one earned run in two innings in his first start off the DL. Pina gave up two runs in four innings and is the only Chiefs pitcher to give up a homer since April 14th. He has allowed a MWL leading five in that timespan.

Gorman’s Pub Player of the game: Josh Lansford (3B) – Lansford was 2-for-4 with a walk, RBI and run scored.

Notes… SS Dylan Johnston became the first Chiefs player thrown out of a game this season when he was tossed after arguing a check swing strike three call to end the top of the fifth…Jonathon Mota has a seven game hit streak…Matt Camp did not start for the first time in 2007 leaving OF Yusuf Carter as the only Chiefs player to start all 27 games…

“As far as his delivery goes, he was more under control tonight than he has been all year,” Harkey said of Marmol. “He’s been doing a lot of work to fix his delivery. Continuing to stay within himself is going to be a big key.”

Marmol fell one shy of tying his season-high 10 strikeouts. He had walked seven batters in his previous two outings entering the night.

“We’ve worked a lot on his direction lately and he needs to understand that that’s going to be a big key to his success,” said Harkey.

...

Both home runs that he allowed came after he fell behind in the count.

“My curveball was very good tonight and it worked, but I was able to get my fastball across for strikes, too,” Marmol said after the game.

Iowa (15-15) reliever Randy Wells, who was responsible for charting Marmol’s pitch speeds with the radar gun, said afterward that Marmol topped out at 96 mph in the game and was consistently in the low to mid 90s throughout the night.

“I felt I got back to basics tonight,” Marmol said.
