STL today

For the first time since becoming a Cardinal, Eckstein started a game and was not the first Cardinal to bat. Although the manager had been pondering the move for several days, La Russa approached Eckstein hours before the game Tuesday to assure him the move was temporary.

Eckstein entered Tuesday's game with a .226 batting average, an offensive identification number that has slid since its peak of .306 in mid-April. Over the next 13 games, he hit .167 and walked just three times. As his slump grew more severe, he didn't reach base without a hit, going without a walk in nine consecutive games before doing so in his first plate appearance Tuesday.

Someone give me a good punchline about heart, grit, and putting every bit of yourself into throws to first base.

But sometimes a giant, freakishly oversized heart and a tiny, child-sized body aren't enough to keep you in the leadoff spot.
