I was at the Chiefs game through the 6th inning (had a commitment after that). Everyone, pretty much without exception, looked awful. I've seen better played little league games. The defense, pitching and hitting all looked pretty bad.

Please don't ask for specific impressions as none of them were good! I want to go to a few more Chiefs games so that this one becomes a distant memory. They were charged with four errors before I left. They should have been charged with at least two more and then there were at least a couple other plays that should have been made. For instance, Canzler played a pretty routine grounder off to his side and whiffed on it for a "clean" hit.

Canzler was "defensively challenged" last year too. But there should be some talent too. Joseph was very good in right.

I wouldn't use the gun readings as well, it was usually 5 MPH slower.

IowaCubs.com"]Dickey, Sounds silence Cubs

R.A. Dickey pitched eight strong innings and drove in a run as Nashville shut down visiting Iowa, 6-1, on Saturday.

Dickey (1-2) yielded one run on four hits, struck out four and walked one in his first start since surrendering 10 runs over five innings against New Orleans on April 16. The former first-round draft pick and U.S. Olympian helped himself in the second when he singled home Ozzie Chavez to give the Sounds a 3-0 lead.

Mitch Stetter worked around a hit in the ninth to close out the win for Nashville (11-6).

Andy Abad drilled his first homer of the season, a two-run shot off starter Angel Guzman in the third. Chavez collected three hits and an RBI, while Ryan Braun went 2-for-4 with a double for Nashville.

Iowa (9-8) totaled five hits and committed two errors as its three-game winning streak was snapped. The Cubs scored their only run in the fifth when Buck Coats grounded out to plate Koyie Hill, who led off with a double.

Guzman (0-1) surrendered five runs on six hits in three innings, walking two without recording a strikeout. Randy Wells was reached for one run on three hits and three walks over four frames. --Danny Wild/MLB.com

SmokiesBaseball.com"]SMOKIES SHUTOUT BAYBEARS BEHIND HART

Sevierville, TN– Kevin Hart pitched seven innings of scoreless ball, and Chris Walker extended his hitting streak to 8 games as the Tennessee Smokies blanked the Mobile BayBears 5-0 on Saturday night in front of 4,622 raucous fans. This was the first shutout of the season for the Smokies, who improved to 8-6 to stay in first place in the North Division.

The Smokies scored the first run of the game in the bottom half of the fifth. Chris Walker continued his hot streak with a single, but was picked off at first. Jorge Cortes, who made a tremendous run-saving catch in the top of the inning to double up the BayBears, followed with a single of his own. After Jake Fox reached on an error, Josh Kroeger singled to bring home Cortes to take the lead 1-0.

In the sixth inning, Issmael Salas led off with a base hit, and then moved to second on a single by Joe Simokaitis. The BayBears brought in left-handed pitcher and former Smokie Clint Goocher to force Walker to bat from the right side of the plate. Walker then blasted the first homerun of 2007 at Smokies Park over the leftfield wall to increase the lead to 4-0. The Smokies added another run in the seventh with a RBI triple by Gary Cates, scoring Chris Robinson who reached on an error.

Paul Schappert came on in relief for two scoreless innings. The game was capped off with an exciting double play on a line drive to Issmael Salas, who threw out the runner at 2nd base for the third double play of the night.

Daytona Drops to 8-8 on the Season

Matt Martinez

[PORT ST. LUCIE, FL] The Mets(8-7) are back to their old tricks. The Cubs’(8-8) victory on Thursday spurred two straight St. Lucie wins including a 9-1 romping Saturday evening.

Daytona starter Joel Santo sputtered through his first inning of work giving up four runs on four hits. Santo would settle down for the following three innings and would be relieved in the fifth by John Mueller with the Mets ahead 4-0.

Mueller surrendered five runs (one of which was earned) on five base hits and one walk in his two-inning outing to balloon the lead to nine runs.

Meanwhile, the Cubs’ bats remained quiescent through six innings until Kyle Reynolds doubled home Robinson Chirinos for the only Daytona run in the seventh to make the score 9-1.

A scoreless eighth and ninth would leave the score a lopsided 9-1 final in St. Lucie to give the Mets the series and drop Daytona back to .500.

PeoriaChiefs.com"]Peoria's Five Game Win Streak Ends 13-3 @ KC

Geneva, IL – The Peoria Chiefs saw their five game win streak end with a thud Saturday night in a 13-3 loss against in-state rival Kane County . The loss was the first for the Chiefs on their current six game road trip which ends Sunday with a 2:00 pm game against the Cougars.

Kane County entered the game with an eight game losing streak but jumped on Chiefs starter Al Alburquerque in the bottom of the first. Larry Cobb singled up the middle and Alex Valdez followed with a basehit to right. Chiefs’ right-fielder Andrew Lopez tried to get Cobb at third, but his throw sailed into the stands and Cobb was awarded home plate for the first run of the game. With Valdez at second, Alburquerque induced back to back groundouts but the second brought Valdez home for a 2-0 Cougars lead.

Peoria cut the lead in half in the third against Cougars hurler John Herrera. Josh Lansford led of with a single and was still at first with two out. Andrew Lopez drove one to center and Mike Massaro slid but couldn’t handle the double as Lansford scored. The Chiefs tied the game 2-2 in the fourth when DJ Lewis singled home Alfred Joseph.

The Chiefs self-destructed in the fourth and allowed Kane County to blow the game wide open. Christian Vitters led off with a single and Alburquerque gave up a hard hit double to Todd Johnson. With the infield in, Mike Affronti hit a grounder to short and Dylan Johnston threw home. But Wellington Castillo couldn’t handle the throw and Vitters scored. When the ball got away from Castillo, Alburquerque failed to cover the plate in time for the throw and Johnson scored. Massaro followed with a RBI single to right and scored on Cobb’s double to right-center. Alburquerque capped the five run Cougars inning with a wild pitch to score Cobb from third.

The Cougars added three more runs off reliever Marco Carrillo in the fifth. A lead off walk and one out single both came home on a double off the wall by Affronti. Mike Massaro made it 10-3 Cougars with an RBI single of his own.

Alburquerque (1-2) suffered the loss allowing eight hits and seven runs (four earned) over four innings. He walked one, threw a wild pitch and did not record a strikeout. Marco Carrillo tossed two innings out of the bullpen and allowed three runs on three hits with one walk and one strikeout. In 1 2/3 innings, Julio Castillo gave up three runs on three hits and four walks. Jeremy Papelbon recorded the final out for the Chiefs with a strikeout.

Gorman’s Pub Player of the Game: Andrew Lopez (RF) – Lopez was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI in a losing effort. He also picked up his first outfield assist of the season when he threw Alex Valdez out at third base to end the third inning.

Notes… Peoria has not come from behind to regain the lead after falling behind yet this season…Alfred Joseph now has a six game hit streak…Chiefs pitching coach David Rosario was ejected by home plate umpire Bronson Martinez in the bottom of the fifth for arguing balls and strikes…It was the first ejection in a Chiefs game in 2007…
