Wouldn't this be a good time to trade Wade Miller to the Yankees? They seem pretty desparate for SP to the extent that they are using guys that haven't pitched above AA and have the dreaded TBA slotted for Saturday.

Trade Miller, get whatever, promote Cherry and move Guzman into the rotation.

I had the same thought when I heard that Mussina and Pavano both went to the DL. My guess is we probably wouldn't get much in return, but I guess something is better than what he has shown so far for us.

bad Idea in my opinion because Prior is injured, therefore is one of the SP's (Big Z, Hill, Lilly, Marquis) goes down we would not have another SP to fill in. As of now Guzman would slide into one of the SP spots if there is an injury.

I don't think the Yankees would give up much (anything?) for him. If he's not good enough to hold the 5th spot in an NLC rotation, he's going to get destroyed in the ALE.

But if we can't trade him for anything, I'd DFA him if he refuses to go to the pen. Give Guzman a chance!

I don't think many of our remaining starters sans Miller have much of an injury history. That said, I think he has more value with us than he would on the trade mkt - what would we get for him? A single A prospect?

I don't see how valuable he can be to us if he isn't pitching better than the people who could replace him and if he's going to be too stubborn to accept bullpen duty.

Here is what I propose with Miller:

you give him the start today and the start on Sunday. Unless he significantly improves (say-keep his ERA under 5 for just the next two starts combined, with good stuff as well) then Guzman is in. The Cubs have an off day next Thursday, so the 5th starter spot can be skipped one more time. Guzman would then make his debut May 1st at the Pirates.

This does a couple of things-one, it allows Guzman 10 days to get lengthened out for a start-also, it allows the Cubs to keep Miller for a couple more weeks to make sure there's no injury to another starting pitcher, but only giving him 1 more start beyond today in the process. If there hasn't been an injury, Miller gets released or traded before that May 1st date, again as long as he hasn't significantly improved in those 2 starts.

Seems pretty reasonable.

Personally I would rather try Marmol out than Miller is one of the other guys gets hurt.

If it were already June, I would say sell high on Marquis. Sell it as if Rothschild fixed something in his delivery/approach, and that is the cause for his 2.whatever ERA.

But it isn't June yet, so he isn't going anywhere. Hopefully Rothschild really did pick up on something with him and what we all feel is inevitable with him (Estes, part deux) doesn't ever come to be.

(yes, I know he could waive it, but we all know it isn't going to happen).

I doubt that desparte...LOL.

IMO, Miller is no longer a viable starter in the Majors. Mid 80's fastball, no movement. He had a nice run, but its over.

Agreed. Moves I would like to see:

Guzman as the 5th

Theriot as the new SS

If Lou finally benched Izturis for his pathetic bat, I would be endowned to him forever. And I wish poeple on the radio would stop refering to Izturis as a gold glover, he has flashed no such glove since becoming a Cub.

I'm with Danny. I don't think Marquis performance this year is predetermined. Is he going to be a Cy Young candidate, probably not. Can he be an incredibly valuable asset to our pitching staff if he maintains some sense of focus? You betcha. Sell high on Marquis if you can replace the performance, but if you can't, it'd be pretty stupid if we're competing.

Aren't there some rules about trading a recently signed FA in the same year he signed? Unless I'm wrong.
