Bad game all around. Reminds me more of a game from the 2005 season then the 2006 season. Don't worry, this offense is feast or famine, so you guys will be going all nuts when the Cubs reel off 4-5 great offensive performances in a row, and then will be back in the pits in 2 weeks after another famine.

this is really bad for your metabolism.

Not to mention sanity?

Nothing that a few drinks won't cure.

Damn it I knew I needed to start something....

This offense is anemic, it is tough to watch how fundmentally unsound they are. i dont want to hear the excuse that it was cold out b/c the astros are in houston, where it is hot year round. they better pick this crap they call an offense up

is any of this incorrect?

Well, not exactly, however I believe a little perspective says that it's early. I agree that this team is going to bust out offensivly at some point, I just hope it's sooner rather then later. It's the defense that bothers me as well.

Today's game isn't the best all around example of our defensive issues. 9 times out of 10, Lee and Izturius are sound as a pound out there. Barrett's issues are the ones out of what happened today that would have me actually worried.

bad - cubs lose

good - i was right not to overreact about marquis (unlike everyone else)

How?

1.60 WHIP

5.40 ERA

That's flat out terrible.

yes, but in the first inning, everyone acted like he was going to give up 30 runs by the 3rd. The truth is, he wasn't great, but the Cubs offense and defense were worse. This lineup should not have been shut down by Sampson. Marquis would have had to give up 0 or 1 runs for us to win today

Woah there sparky, three errors and a horrible day in the field should also be factored into account on those stats. I bet Lou is going to have a field day with this kind of effort... YIKES! Hate to be in the locker room.

Oddly enough, you're problems will still be there when you sober up.

The defense really frustrated me today. Izturis's three errors, Marquis's questionable throw, Lee's failed scoop and Barrett's failure to know how to position himself, allowing wild pitches.

Marquis impressed me with the way he pitched over bad defense, and Lee and Ram extend their hitting streaks.

Derosa and Izturis need a day off.

DeRosa came through in the 9th. Maybe he's working through it. He hasn't looked "lost" at the plate.

Those stats have nothing to do with the errors.

You understand that errors don't contribute to ERA or WHIP, right?

Nobody thought he was going to give up 30 runs by the 3rd.

Marquis had a terrible outing. Izturis had a terrible game. The offense was terrible. I don't understand why people feel the need to focus on one thing and excuse everything else that happened.

Times like this you have to ask yourself:

You love the Cubs, but have they ever loved you back?

Has training camp started yet?

But it extends the inning, no?

Just for the baseball season. Sheez! You haven't figured it out yet?

But that doesn't affect those stats. You can't give up 3 earned runs in the first and pretend to not share in the blame of a loss.

Sure, but it wasn't a poor outing.

i'm not excusing it. i'm also not panicking over one start where he did better than most expected him to. He was part of the problem, not THE problem. Frankly, I don't care what he did last year. So far this year, he's been good once, decent but not great once. I'll hold my judgment for now

Share the blame, but I've often heard (wouldn't know first hand) that pitching is a mentality as much as a physicality. You start questioning the defense behind you and you start over throwing and doing too much and look out. I'm not saying that it did happen that way, but it's possible.

He was bad before the defense, and he contributed to the bad defense.

So giving up 3 ER's is terrible? Sure.
