"Murton, Moore and Dempster for Ichiro Suzuki"?

Maybe if Murton is hitting about .340 and Dempster has 25 saves.

Also, Furcal plays for the Dodgers, not the Giants, and I doubt they would want to trade back for a guy they got rid of last year, plus their is evidence of a dislike for Hendry by the Dodger's GM.

Dear God, I hope not. I'd rather have Murton over Suzuki considering where they are in their careers and how much $ they are making. Eww.

How about no to all of the above

+1, except for the part about Prior

Murton in a deal for Ichiro? Absolutely terrible move. Wuertz is not the 12th man, he's one of our better relievers. Is Coats making the team? Have I missed something? I thought the bench looked to be Ward, Theriot, Floyd, Blanco, & Cedeno...

And hopefully, the Cubs are nowhere near the MLB lead in steals, because, more than likely, they'd also be among the leaders in CS.

I think that is very likely. Perhaps Miller will move to 4 and Prior slides into 5, and Marquis flops.

I think Izturis is going to be a pleasant surprise. His defense is going to help the pitching staff, and his hitting is going to be a shocker. I think Theriot will eventually be getting most of the time at 2B while hitting 2nd, and don't think Buck Coats will have much of a role on this team.

Soriano moved to LF after Cubs trade Jones mid-May and move Murton to RF and Pie to CF.

No way is Murton ever moving to RF. He doesn't have the arm. This is why I don't understand the Soriano in CF experiment - Pie is an excellent defender and the sooner he makes it, the better. I don't understand why Soriano isn't learning RF instead of CF. When Pie makes it, the Cubs will be better with him in CF. It sure would make sense for Soriano to have RF experience at that point. Jacque Jones can play CF in the meantime.

Guzman recalled as new 5th starter as Cubs demote Marquis to long relief after they release Miller, early June.

I'd like to see Guzman have a good half in AAA first.

Jeez, that would be nice. Seattle is going to pay that guy, though. He is a marketing goldmine for them.

Eric Patterson should probably spend the whole year in AA/AAA.

We'll see. Definately possible.

I'll just say its been the tendency of the Cubs to give EPatt a taste of the next level at the end of each year before a promotion the year after. This all depends on production, though.

after #1 the rest are varying degrees of implausible:

2. Hendry likes Izturis and no one else does.

3. I guess it could happen but promoting Pie is problematic and inconsistent with the "win now" attitude the Cubs have.

4. I would think they'd be able to trade Miller rather than release him.

5. An OF of Ichiro, Soriano and Pie would have very little power. They might hit a combined 50 HRs and that's with Soraino hitting 35 of them

6. EPat makes more sense as a Sept callup.

7. They'd need to steal a lot of bases to make up for having very little power in the OF.

I don't believe you Lou.

It is a mark of the Cubs' newfound depth that the job of making the final roster cuts, never easy for a manager, will be even harder this spring. Piniella says that these Cubs have more than enough qualified players, so he will be forced to cut players who deserve a spot on a Major League roster.

"Probably the hardest thing for me personally will be the cuts that are coming here in the next few days," Piniella says. "I don't enjoy those, but it's part of my job.

"It's not easy. We're going to have to cut our roster, and truthfully, some of these cuts that we have to make, players have done more than enough to be here. It's easier sending a player out when they really haven't had a particularly good spring and so forth. But boy, these kids here have done a pretty nice job, and everybody's worked hard. It's not going to be easy for me. I was thinking about it last night, and I didn't like the prospect.

I don't doubt that kids have worked hard, but I think these final cuts have been set in stone for some time now and will be quite easy to make. But it's nice of Lou to pretend he's agonizing over some of these moves.

I agree, he's probably already made up his mind but I'm sure it's still hard to confront the players. No doubt there have been many tears shed in the manager's office on cut day--in addition to the guy who asked who's running the show?

"Yeah, I've had, 'Who the [heck] is making decisions around here? Do you people know what you're doing?'" Piniella said.

Late April -- Izturis to DL and out for a month. Cedeno/Theriot to SS. Theriot wins the job outright. Izzy becomes trade bait. Salary will be eaten to move him.

Due to a bleeding of talent over the last 10-15 years, the National League will, rather than add the DH, add a fourth, freelance outfielder. This stipulation will facilitate a three-way trade between the Cubs, Red Sox, and Yankees whereby the the Cubs receive Manny Ramirez, A-Rod, and Bobby Abreu for Jones, Perez, Eyre, and a player to be named way later.
