This is from the TRib this morning

"I remember Bret Boone, who loves Lou, in his first year [in Seattle], he had a guy on second base with nobody out. Lou said, 'Son, I don't care what you do to hit the ball to right field…' He pulled the ball down the left-field line.

"Lou says, 'Go down to the minor leagues for a week or two and learn how to do it.' He shipped him out. But then he came back a better player. If you want to call that a curse … I thought it was pretty good, after the career he has had."

Would Dusty have done anything like this? I know it was Brett Boone, but you gotta love that he wants the players to play the right way.

No, Dusty wouldn't have even benched the player. He would have just said "Nice try, Dude; you'll get it next time."

If he were a veteran, yeah. If he were a rook, he'd be chained to the pine for 3 weeks before being expected to come in as a PH with sharp timing...

Not only do I doubt The Dude would have done that, but I seriously doubt he would have suggested hitting the ball anywhere other than where 'the fielders aren't'.

Well, the big problem is that you really can't ship out a veteran to the MiLs without his consent. The only thing a manager can do is bench a guy if he isn't cooperating.

As far as what Dusty would have done, I'm not sure but I'm glad that I don't have to worry about it... I didn't agree with a lot of his in-game decisions but I'm not so sure that he was above getting in the face of some veteran players; Barrett said that Baker let him have it when he wasn't doing what was expected.

If it was a belt-high, hanging curve ball on the inner half, I would hope that he'd pull the ball and hit it really hard. I don't care what the baserunner situation is in that case.

I think that illustration was just an example of the larger point. When I talked to my Mariners friend when Lou was hired, he said that he liked young players but that he would quickly deal with anyone who refused to listen to him. He specifically brought up the example of how Boone was defiant towards Lou a lot, and that got him traded to the Reds. This illustration seems to reinforce that point of the consequences of defiance on this club.

With all the NTCs on this club, it could get interesting.

Probably because he was a white cat.

Can't play in the heat and all.

True. I forgot to consider the part of the quote mentioning that it was Boone's first season. Boone would have been benched for a Neifi-like middle infielder with no talent.

Hopefully all that's in his past now. We definitely don't need to be freaking out about hitters pulling the ball with a man on second.

My thoughts exactly. I see this snippet as a negative, if anything.

I'm still happy with what I've seen of Lou with the Cubs up till now, though.
