Carrie Muskat / MLB.com[/url]"] Angel Guzman gave up one hit over two innings on Tuesday and was throwing 93-95 mph easily. "He looks like he wants a spot on the club," Piniella said of the right-hander. "He's throwing the ball very well. You look at his natural stuff, and it's as good as people in camp. Now, he's pitched well in two-inning stints. We're talking about a young starter here. We'll see more as we stretch him out and get him into the three-, four-, five-[inning] category. You've got to be pleased with his stuff, there's no question about that."

I will say what I have said about Angel for the last 4 years. If he is physically able to pitch, he will do it well. Easily the most talented arm to come thru the Cubs system since Zambrano.

I agree. Why is he hurt so often?

I hope it isn't because his arm motion sucks, like Woody...

I really would like to see his moition now and then. He's a heck of a pitcher and it looks as if Lou thinks that way too. I really don't see Prior as being more effective than Guzman in 2007.

I've felt that way for all of 2007. I'm on record as saying Prior won't be back until June or so and IMO no way will he ever pass Guzman from here on as long as Guzman stays healthy.

Honest question, quality answer.

I've not had much hope for prior over the offseason, but I must admit I've gotten my hopes up a little with all the positive news out of camp.

Right now I'm cautiously optimistic. I think we'll have a definite answer after two more appearances.

I hope Prior comes back too believe me. I want the Cubs to have all the weapons and obviously Prior is one on them and I'm rooting for him to be healthy and effective.

If Guzman keeps looking this good and Prior starts looking good, does anyone think there's a chance Guzman gets a spot over Marquis?

And on a side note, I've just been thinking about all the pitchers we have that have the potential to be very good. Imagine if Prior, Guzman, Veal, Gallagher, and Samardzija all work out (I know its very unlikely, but I'm dreaming). Add Zambrano, Hill, and Lilly into that and we're sitting very pretty.

I don't think Guzman would get a spot over Marquis regardless of how the two were pitching in ST-certainly not when Marquis is also looking very good so far in ST.

Exactly. I'm sure Marquis has already done enough between his contract and first two ST appearances to ensure he's in the rotation.

It's quite a funny situation considering his career leading up until now should be enough to ensure he's not in a starting rotation.

I don't think so because of his low IP in recent years and the need to gradually stretch him out. I talked about this in another thread maybe a week ago. But the quote from Lou probably tells you that he is aware of Guzman's situation.

We're talking about a young starter here. We'll see more as we stretch him out and get him into the three-, four-, five-[inning] category. You've got to be pleased with his stuff, there's no question about that

I think Marquis gets a grace period no matter what and they'd like to have Guzman starting in Iowa for a litlte bit.

Also

I really don't see Prior as being more effective than Guzman in 2007.

I understand recent dissapointment in Prior, but Guzman has had just as much due to injuries and has never really been effective enough since to make me as convinced. A 4.04 AAA ERA and 7.39 in the majors? Even terrible Prior last year in the majors bested him at 7.21. I love Guzman's potential, but you can't ignore Prior's as well. If I had to make a choice, I'd take the guy who has done it before.
