i think there's more late first round/second round talent, but not a lot of studs.

that's because they're all on DJ and tim's keeper rosters.

BEST KEEPER ROSTERS EVER!

Nah, my keeper roster last year was much stronger. If only I hadn't missed the draft...

yea, I agree that your roster last year combined with your draft picks was daunting. what you need to do is look at last years draft and see some of the productive players taken in later rounds. you won't get an obvious stud but the league is won by taking a great player in round 8.

Even at 7 it's not like I'll be getting a major player from what my draft cards look like. I'll get a solid player for the roster, but it doesn't look like an overly deep draft. Then again, I'm the rookie here.

One of my best players last season was Sarge Jr who I picked up off waivers. The key is finding good values later and even on the waiver wire.

I can agree with that. I didn't win my Yahoo! league last year but I did finish 2nd in the league. Most of my moves were waiver moves throughout the season as I saw I had a need in certain areas in points.

Question of the day:

What's the earliest we'll see a minor leaguer get drafted on draft day?

there's not as many good minor leaguers available this year. tim's cocky ass was picking minor leaguers in the first round. worked out ok for him, though...i think he won the whole thing.

One bad thing about the early draft is some minor leaguers may be added to the database in March. You going to take him in the first round Tim? I don't see any first round minor leaguers.

there's one guy that I feel pretty confident is going to be a second half stud this season. So he's definitely on my radar, but I don't think I have to take him in the first round to get him. He's not really high on the overall radar screen. There's a second guy that I really like that's out there, too, and he'll probably go before my #1 guy. I think he's going to have a slower transition to the majors, though, so he's not as high on my list.

Overall, pretty much anyone could look at my roster and figure out my draft strategy. My needs are pretty simple:

1) I have no relievers and learned last year what it means to be stuck with crappy relievers all year (especially after I gambled on Soriano over Putz to take over as closer in Seattle and lost that bet).

2) I need a little more depth in SP. I have at least five guys who are slated to be SP's out of the gate, but four of them are very young and at least one is battling a sore arm already. One or two quality SP's are very necessary additions.

3) All my position players are set, but I have a rookie with competition at SS and a brittle old guy in my OF (sheff). If I could get players who could cover those positions it would help a lot.

4) I have Delmon covering U for me. If I could get a bigger bat than that to man the position, he could compete with Sheffield for my last OF spot.

Where I take what players depends entirely on who is available when I pick and what positions I fill first. I'm hoping to cover all those needs with five players and I have five of the first 51 picks. I'll probably start refilling my minor leagues in the fifth round and after. I want to reach my fourth straight finals and this time I want to have the depth to win despite late season injuries and resting for real-world playoffs.

Does anyone know if Vegas is giving Odds on who will win Roadkill this year?

raw is 1:10 and Tim 1:5. Everyone else 10000:1

Awesome.

I would like to put $1 on the Quakers. 10000:1 is too good to pass up. :D

Not like last year, but there are a couple. Maybin and McCutcheon were good early round pick ups for me last year.

With our early draft, the first round of waivers should prove interesting.

I've been around since the league started, and look at my overall record. Even though I haven't won it, I've been in the playoffs every year but one since the inception of the league. We usually hear people's opinions each year. I'd love to hear people's thoughts on my keepers this year.

sounds similar to where I'm at.

I have one stud starter (Webb), one potentially solid starter (Reyes), one of the best closers (Ryan), two very good outfielders (Ichiro and Wells), a decent second baseman (Iguchi), and solid depth at both corner infield positions if a couple of youngsters live up to their promise (Gonzalez and Garko at first, Tracy and Marte at third). If they all have good seasons that will also give me my utility player and possibly some trade bait. I'm mainly looking for a few more starting pitchers, at least one more good closer, a shortstop, one more starting outfielder, and a catcher in case Mathis fizzles again. I have a bit less depth than some other teams because one of my keepers (Liriano) will be on the DL all year and another (Guzman) may be in the minors but doesn't qualify to be carried on my minor league roster during the off-season because damn Dusty gave him one too many starts last year. More needs plus fewer draft picks equals praying for good free agent pickups and promotions from the minors. :D

Juan, I like your team as the third best for keepers.

its too late to kiss-ass now! :D

I'm pretty dependent on those young outfielders and I need a 3b. I'm kind of like the Cubs in that if a certain SP is healthy, my team looks a lot better.

After all of the preparation to be available on draft day, I'll miss at least 30 minutes at the start. The good news in this is that I won't be around for people to laugh at my first selection.

If you trade me your first pick, you won't miss it. ;)

ha ha, good point.

I only have 3 positions that need to be filled (C, 1 OF pos, 1B) and like what I'm looking at with the rest of my lineup. The bad thing about not being here is that I was hoping to fill the positions with the best available talent at each position and then begin drafting for the future.

BTW Tim, if you see a couple of missed calls from yesterday it was me. Me and Chasity are coming to Chicago for the first 2 home games of the season. I had an outside shot at an extra ticket for opening day and thought I'd see if you're available. Unfortunately I doubt it's still available but thought I'd ask.

Any chance of meeting up while there?

I assume that you'll be here over a weekend? If so, then we'll have to be sure to get together. If you're coming up during the week, I can't commit to being around due to work travel.

We will not even be able to leave Tennessee until Sunday afternoon at the absolute earliest. With this being the baby's first Easter I have complete confidence that we will have to visit all of the grandparents Sunday afternoon. If we can get on the road by Sunday afternoon it would be a great thing.

As it looks we'll be getting up very early on Monday morning and getting to Chicago, check in our hotel and hopefully be at Wrigley with enough time to get lunch and enjoy the pregame festivities. We'll likely see the game on Tuesday and immediately leave town after the game, especially since both of us have to be at work on Wednesday.

In that case, I just don't have enough visibility to know if I'm going to be around at that time. I wish I did, but I just can't say at this point.

I just finished doing my minor league analysis, now off to prerank my players.

I love my infield so far, but I'm going to have to improve my OF, and will need a big season from Markakis if I'm going to do anything.

I have 2 solid SP, and no bullpen, so we'll see where this draft takes us.
