well it's clear that the entire concept of the franchise tag is broken

what do you mean?

if the idea is "here, we would like to reward you for one year by paying you a ton of money" and the player can just be a twit and put and demand stuff, it doesn't work. I don't understand why the idea of making the average of the top salaries at your position is often met with disdain

Because it doesn't involve a large, guaranteed signing bonus along with a long-term contract.

Football is a unique sport. The money isn't guaranteed. Anyone can be cut at any moment and not get a dime from his team (relatively speaking). Football also has the distinction of being the most dangerous team sport.

I will agree that the franchise tag is misused by teams and thus the players look at it as a slap in the face. A franchised player is one major knee injury away from never earning another dime as an NFL player.

the "long-term" of the contract makes no difference at all. a player could care less if he receives extra years on a contract as a team can cut said player at any time. it's all about the signing bonus.

if the bears wanted to give briggs a large signing bonus, i'm sure he'd jump at it. the team is the one to be concerned about years, because, essentially, the bonus should be a reflection of how long the team controls the player.

While the Bears didn't place the franchise tag on linebacker Lance Briggs with the intention of trading him, the team as of Wednesday was still negotiating with the Washington Redskins about a possible deal.

:-s

if rocky mcintosh isn't included, i don't do it. i'd even part with a 4th rounder, but that's as high as i go.

I'd love Mcintosh. I don't understand why the Redskins would trade up to get him last year and then trade him this year, but I hope they do.

The Redskins are a very stupid franchise.

i'd imagine that he'd put up pretty good numbers in the tampa-2.

but if they want briggs, one of the best in the game, they'll have to give up a replacement. at least if i were in charge.

which is good. i think he's playing hardball and he's not the least bit concerned with appeasing briggs and rosenhaus insomuch as it doesn't appease the bears.

According to a report from Scout.com (registration required), the New York Giants have made an offer to the Chicago Bears for linebacker Lance Briggs. The report also states that the offer would be for the Giants number one draft pick; 20th overall. It went on to add that they would need to sweeten the deal a bit for a move to actually happen

I'd imagine they'd have to sweeten it a lot to top the Redskins deal or am I just being dim?

I would actually like this deal better vs. the Skins deal. We would have 3 picks in the first two rounds vs. 2. Plus no huge signing bonuses', holdouts, to deal with.

I think its alot better cuz we dont have to give up the 31st pick, giving us 2 in the first round...(thats they way I am reading it anyway..)

still, maybe the Giants can kick in a 3-4 rd'r too... :)

I'd probably take it straight up, if the Bears got to keep all their picks. 3 picks from 20-37 could conceivably bring in 3 starters, provided the Bears have 3 holes to fill.

You won't be giving $25-30M guaranteed to players in the bottom 1/3 of the 1st round. The 6th pick, was another story.
