Has anyone run through the 07 assignments for the Cubs?

I was thinking of the pitchers

Iowa

1. Angel Guzman

2. Sean Marshall

3. Jae-kuk Ryu

4. Juan Mateo

5. Randy Wells

Carlos Marmol closing?

Ryan O'Malley anywhere?

Tennessee

1. Sean Gallagher

2. Donald Veal

3. Chris Shaver

4. JR Mathes

5. Adam Harben

Grant Johnson and Mark Holliman closing?

Daytona

1. Mitch Atkins

2. Scott Taylor

3. Mark Prior

4. Justin Berg

5. Carlos Perez

Jeremy Papelbon closing?

Peoria

1. Mark Pawelek

2. Darin Downs

3. Jose Ceda

4. Jake Renshaw

5. Mike Billek

Boise

1. Chris Huseby

Is Harben going to be healthy to start the year?

Is Petrick going to be able to go?

Who else is on the injury bus?

No problem with Iowa.

Tennessee:

1. Sean Gallagher

2. Donnie Veal

3. Chris Shaver

4. JR Mathes

5. Mark Holliman (Harben to the pen if he's healthy enough)

Daytona:

1. Mitch Atkins

2. Scott Taylor

3. Grant Johnson

4. Justin Berg

5. Billy Petrick (if healthy)/Bobby Brownlie/Carlos Perez/

Peoria:

1. Mark Pawelek

2. Billy Muldowney

3. Joel Santo

4. Mike Billek

5. Darin Downs/Jeff Samardzija

Boise:

1. Chris Huseby

2. Jose Ceda

3. Jake Renshaw

4. Jose Pina - or, more likely, an 07 draftees

5. Kitt Kopach/Miguel Cuevas - 07 draftee here too, I think Miguel will be at Mesa and Kopach in the pen

If Miller/Prior are not healthy or completely ineffective, are you assuming Cotts is starting for the Cubs, at least in the colder months?

That could change Iowa to allow Marmol or O'Malley to start the season in the rotation, if one of the top rotation candidates goes to Chicago.

I wonder if the Cubs will leave Marmol in the rotation for now to get him more innings to work on his control. Shifting Wells from that group into relief wouldn't be a big deal.

I"m interested to hear the argument in favor of keeping Gallagher in W.Tenn for another year, despite the fact that he handled AA pretty impressively. IMO I would rather see his ability to handle the bump up in leagues to determine whether he would be a better option for a call up than leave him to dominate AA again.

1) He's only spent a partial season at AA

2) while some of his numbers were great, he did have some red flags such as the walk rate

3) There are other significant prospects ahead of him in the system that need their turns in a rotation and have already had full seasons at AA

The guys at AAA aren't necessarily good enough to keep Sean at AA if he looks absolutely outstanding in the spring, but given #1 and #2 combined with #3 it likely makes more sense for him to return to the southern league.

He probably controls his own destiny of where he goes, though.

Is Pawelek healthy? What was his injury, I can't remember.

I'd be in favor of that as well, I personally would prefer to see Marmol get as many innings as possible since pitching is so much newer to him compared to other prospects. I'm sure with call-ups and whatnot, Randy Wells would get back to starting. It just seems more probable that the Cubs will get Carlos experience closing.

He wasn't injured.

Is Harben going to be healthy to start the year?

Is Petrick going to be able to go?

Who else is on the injury bus?

Chris Shaver had offseason surgery to remove elbow chips.

So they just shut him down? Was he as dominate last year as he was in rookie ball?

:?:

He pitched in short-season Boise, he pitched their full season (three months long). He struggled with his control, was demoted to the pen, fixed his mechanics and came out and pitched great the last 2 months, including 6 shutout innings in his playoff start. Here are his 05 and 06 stats: link.

So where is Cherry?

I'm guessing set up or closer at Iowa.

Iowa could have an intriguing pen, too, with Wells/Marmol, Clay, Cherry & (hopefully) Campy.

Thanks raisin.

If someone gets called up form Iowa who is the first Tenn guy called up? Will Veal or Gallagher be ready by mid season to get that call up?

Well, Gallagher has a good chance to start the season at Iowa, so he's got to be the most likely. Chris Shaver spent all but the first week of last season at West Tenn, so he should be ready for AAA too. I think Veal could use quite some time at Tennessee this season, there are a few concerns he need to address.

Just like last year when I was hoping a young guy would step up like Hill I think one will again this year for the big team.

I don't know much about Shaver and I like to see guys that I haven't heard that much about step up and go to the next level and succeed.
