I can't believe baseball season is just a month away! I can't wait. The Owls start Feb 3. In the Minute Maid Classic they've got Vandy so we could see Joe Savery versus David Price, and a little added kick for me as I know two starters on Vandy and three possibly four at Rice. I'll definitely be there. Last year's MMC was a dandy with the Rice Texas game finale.

Rice is #1 in Collegiate Baseball's Preseason Poll

29. Oral Roberts (41-16) 426 14

30. Long Beach St. (29-27) 424 -

31. Louisiana St. (35-24) 421 -

32. Mississippi St. (37-23) 420 -

38. Michigan (43-21) 406 -

39. Notre Dame (45-17-1) 403 -

40. Ohio St. (37-21) 401 -

Tennessee is my sleeper as in who could win it and aren't in the top ten. I also like TCU and Tulane this year as well as the usual picks.

Yeah SC has had good ones for awhile now. Nick Fuller went to class, as did Sam Dyson I believe. Both guys are power righties with fastballs that can get it in the mid 90s.

South Carolina’s top four rivals Baylor’s for star power, led by Chisenhall, the nation’s top two-way player. Fuller touches 95 with his fastball and owns a filthy but inconsistent slider. Dyson has serious arm strength and has touched 97 but needs to refine his secondary stuff. Transfers Jones and Costner should make immediate impacts at second base and in the bullpen.
From BA's Recruiting class thing. They were number 2, Baylor (!) was number one.

From BA's top 100 HS prospects for 07 though, they have one guy committed, #76 Kyle Greenwalt. Supposedly Greenwalt throws 92-94 with a power curve.

Woo #3!

I believe South Carolina had a really good recruting class in 06.

Ranked #1 by Collegiate Baseball.

Justin Smoak was also selected as a second team Preseason All-American.

Second team? What? That's BS.

Bah, UCLA just missing the top 25.

Vandy has three kids that I know and think well of.

Mike Minor 6'3 LHP pitches low 90's good FB and CB. Needs to sharpen his secondary pitches. Great character kid, laser beam sharp. Very focused.

Mark Lamm 6'4 RHP another Low 90's guy. Comes from a baseball family. Has two older brothers who have filled out and there is no reason to believe he wont to.

Steven Liddle 6'1 OF LHH His uncle is a coach for the Twins. His last few summers have been spent with him working with the MLB club. Beautiful left handed swing. Played his HS ball in a huge park, (CF 390, Lines 330), as a Junior hit .400 with 8HR and 22 Doubles. As a senior hit 10 and 35+ while posting a .400 plus average.

Minor has the highest ceiling of the three. Liddle isnt blessed with great speed, while Lamm is easily the most athletic of the three.

I really think this is our year. We were extremely lucky only losing Jason Place to the draft. We got arms that we needed and our lineup just got a year older and more experienced. I am not sure there is a position player in college baseball for whom I would trade Justin Smoak.

Not even Pedro Alvarez or Matt Wieters?

Granted that was a homer comment. I really don't have an expansive knowledge base required to make such a statement.

I'll just say that Justin Smoak is NASTY.

Smoak is a much better hitter than Wieters. He was ahead of Wieters in BA's CCL Top 30. Wieters was third I believe. Smoak and Alvarez? That's a tough one.

I found a LOT of previews for teams, Ill link them all soon. Quite a few are Rivals subscriptions that i dont have, some of you college football recruiting gurus might though.

where does smoak project in the draft?

Potential to be the #1 overall pick in the 2008 draft.

any chance he enters early into this one?

He can't.

Well technically he could, if he were to dropout of South Carolina and enter a junior college in the next few days which is very doubtful.
