Sterling Hitchcock-S- Padres Dec. 20 - 12:43 pm et

The Padres will consider signing Sterling Hitchcock if he shows enough in a workout for the team.

"We'll take a look at him throwing," assistant GM Fred Uhlman Jr. said. "I wouldn't rule it out." It's unclear when Hitchcock will begin throwing for teams. The 35-year-old left-hander is attempting a comeback after spending two seasons in retirement.

Advice to parents: Teach your kid to throw left-handed.

Being a lefty is good, but you also need the name. "Sterling Hitchcock" is a quality big league name.

He saw the money we shelled out to Jason Marquis and figured even himself after being retired and out of the game for 2 years could put up a 6.71ERA.

The Marquis signing was an obvious one, what with Hendry's recent appreciation for players with French (or French sounding) names:

-Jason Dubois

-Juan Pierre

-Jacque Jones

-Marquis Grissom

-Jason Marquis

Then why didn't he go after Mike Piazza, then? Although there were rumors Hendry was interested in Tony Graffanino.

The only way Piazza and Graffanino would be considered even part French is if their ancestors bought Gallic slave women following Rome's conquest of Gaul.
