This isn't CF-related, but is anyone else puzzled by the interest in Cliff Floyd? There's nowhere to play him, unless you're going to be sitting Murton a lot of the time against RHP, which is counterproductive to his development.

I like Church, but I don't think Hendry thinks he is a starting option. I think he looks at him as more of a bench player.

I don't think so. It appears Hendry is keen on getting a left-handed hitting CF and the options out there are slim.

How does Pie deserve a shot? He really has to work on his OBP before we give him a shot

What does deserve have to do with it? Izturis doesn't deserve a job. Lilly and Meche don't deserve the contracts they are likely to get. We don't deserve the crap we've seen.

Well, if they get 700 PA out of LF, I'm not sure they think Floyd would give them anymore than 300, in which case Murton would have 400 there, and probably another 50-75 in pinch hitting opportunities and starts elsewhere.

He pounded the ball in the second half, and his .060 IsoD is far from a disaster.

Did Pie participate in any of the winter leagues? If so, how did he do?

Poorly.

He did, and he has under a .600 OPS in it.

You don't want to know.

That's approximately my thinking about what the breakdown on at-bats would be between them, with Murton maybe getting even a few more than that (and Floyd being the first pinch-hitter off the bench and so getting plenty of pinch-hit at-bats)

Murton still loses plate appearances from last year. I just don't see the point. He actually was solid last year, with a .365 OBP in just his first year, and I think he could be a good regular for years to come (not to mention a cheap regular). I don't understand taking ABs away from him with a guy like Floyd.

I think a more versatile guy in the OF who is more a 4th-OF type than a guy who's going to expect 300-400 ABs, like Floyd will, is a better fit for the cubs.

That's not good.

And it's an understatement, if you can believe that.

The goal is not to do what is best for Murton, the goal is to maximize production. If Floyd/Murton is better than Murton, it helps the team. And I don't even think it really hurts Matt's development. Is there another 4th OF type you have in mind? The Cubs need more offense, desperately. Mixing in a LH hitting LF isn't the ideal way to find it, but they do need it.

maybe the thinking is Floyd in LF, Soriano in CF and Murton in RF?

wait, that's assuming there is thinking going on. sorry, carry on

in other words, he made ronny cedeno look like a solid hitter

If the thinking involves Floyd as an everyday man, there isn't much thinking going on.

Hell, if that's the case, trade Jones, put Soriano in CF, and get Aubrey Huff to play RF. He's more durable than Floyd and could fill in at a corner infield spot if needed.

Do you know what his OBP was during the second half of the season in Iowa?

I think it was somewhere in the .360s. If he can sustain anywhere near that level, that's good enough for me.
