Ok, it's late and I've had a few pops but my logic looks like this:

If the Cubs cannot sign Shmidt or Lilly. Heck, even if they sign Lilly, they will probably need someone better to get them over the top, so to speak, to the playoffs.

If the Cubs are in the mix in June who may be available?

I'm thinking both position wise (2nd, CF, and SS) and starting pitching.

Would Hendry be smart not to spend all the loot and wait to see who is available to put the team in a position to win it all? I'm thinking yes as I look out and see who is availabe now.

Am I drunk and looking too far in the future?

I can only answer to one of those, but I'd say Yes. ;)

Ten Names that Might Be Available

1. Andruw Jones- He's in the last year of his contract. If the Braves are out of it, they would look to move him. He's 10-5, so it could be tricky.

2. Tim Hudson- He's affordable for this year, but his salary jumps in 2008-2009. The Braves might want to ship him to a team in desperate need for a pitcher.

3. Mark Teixeira- 2007 will be the last year of his deal. The Rangers hope to contend, but if they falter, Tex could be the bat that puts a team over the edge.

4. Ichiro- His contract ends after 2007. Unless he signs an extension with Seattle, I could see him being moved this summer.

5. Vernon Wells- If he's not extended and the Blue Jays fall out of the race, Wells will be moved.

6. Livian Hernandez- He's a durable starter. Teams always look at these at the deadline.

7. Marcus Giles- If he's not traded before, he'll be a hot commodity at the deadline.

8. Jose Vidro- For the right package, I think the Nationals would move him.

9. Geoff Jenkins

10. Omar Vizquel

Indeed. But I don't want Hendry to spend unwisely. It may be too late with Fonzie already here.

Where would Teixeira play for the Cubs? Also, I think Willis and Cabrera could conceivably be available. I have a hard time seeing the Braves considering themselves eliminated by the end of July.

I was just listing some people that I thought might be moved. Not all of those fit the Cubs needs.

That being said, Tex could likely play a corner outfield spot if needed.

Draft Tex! bah.

I wouldn't plan now for the trade deadline.

I disagree. it is very wise to look that far into the future. as I mentioned to you in another thread where you predicted the Cubs to be a .500 team should they add Lilly, nobody ever goes into October with the same team they went into April with. that is the primary reason I think it silly to build an alledged 'World Series' team in December.

going into the season with a weakness or two, but with full intention of addressing those weaknesses, is not a bad thing. give it a couple months to see exactly where your weaknesses are or where injuries may occur, then make a deal or two to become the complete team we would all like to go into the season with. what is dumb is trying to address every weakness on the club in a bad market. give it a few more months for everything to shake out.

I agree. And also we don't know what our weaknesses will be. We anticipate that CF may be a problem or starting pitching may be a problem, but we don't "KNOW" that they will be problems. Funny things happen and if we spend all our resources trying to address all of our anticipated weaknesses during the winter we risk not having anything to put out fires if a major injury happens (such as Derrek Lee getting injured last year) or if one of our young players pans out.
